Kaplan Rant

Nursing Students General Students

I'm in my first semester of an ABSN program at a private college (not cheap unforch). Two days before orientation we received a letter in the mail stating that we must purchase Kaplan Nursing for a total of a little over $500, that would be used over the course of our four semesters. This was frustrating for the fact all of us had already figured out our loans and money situation, only to have a considerable chunk of money added to our expenses at the last minute.

My problem is with Kaplan itself. It's very obvious that the school is gaining financially in some way for requiring the students to purchase Kaplan. Our professors have forced it into their cirriculum with assignments worth, on average, 1% of our grades. These assignments never match up with what we're learning at the time and offer zero benefit to our learning... and that's not an exaggeration.

Does anyone else have this problem? It seems wrong to me to be squeezing these extra pennies out of nursing students who are already drowning in student loans. Shame on my college, I guess.

Rant over, thanks for reading!

My school uses Kaplan. It helps you understand how to answer NCLEX style questions. It's graded because your instructors want you to take the assignments seriously. Friends who have already taken NCLEX said that Kaplan did a good job preparing them for it--some even say Kaplan questions were harder than NCLEX.

It does suck that the cost was sprung on you guys though.
