IVAB QUESTION

Hello all,

I have a question regarding IVAB's.

So I seen there are certain IV antibiotics and volumes that are NOT recommend for IV injection but rather an infusion. However, the volume was quite small...like 10mL or something. If it is not recommend to be administered via IV inject, then how would I administer it? would I add it to like a NS solution or something?

Not all medications can be given IV Push. Some must be given slower over 20 or 30 minutes, or in some cases, it may be a 2 hour infusion. Work closely with your pharmacist. In addition, your medication drug handbooks will help guide you as to the proper administration. Whether the antibiotic is mixed in 50 cc of diluent or even 250 cc of NS or D5W... follow manufacturers instructions.

Syringe pumps are also used at times to give small volumes of antibiotic.

There are commercially designed systems such as the Mini-bag plus system, or the vial-mate system which incorporates the dry drug powder and the diluent and the nurse merely assembles the set and then administers it after activation.
