Hello,

I will be entering my last year of nursing school. I have one CNA job that I work about once a week. I also just got offered a job that is 20 hours per week. This new job is also 1 hour away, but is in my dream unit (ER).

How many hours per week did you work during nursing school?

Would you be willing to drive 1 hour to get to work?

The real benefit to working as a CNA during nursing school is when you work in a facility you plan to apply to as an RN.

This makes you an inside hire when RN applications are being reviewed. Nurse managers would rather hire someone known to them with a good work ethic than someone unknown. When you are working, you are really auditioning for the future RN job :)

I know this is your dream job persay...but do you honestly think you will be cut out to working 20 hours per week with an hour communte there and back? I say if it is really something you are interested in and want to do then you should give it a shot. However, the moment you feel as though your grades are slipping or it's cutting too much into your study time to do great in the program then you should try to cut back on those hours or resign all together. Dream job or no, becoming an RN should be your first priority and the jobs will come later.
