Betty Ackley and Gail Ladwig, Nursing Diagnosis Handbook. The best, hands down. Save yourself some dough, and get a used one, a previous edition (they don't change that much).

Shielda Rodgers, Medical-Surgical Nursing Care Plans is also good, and a nice complement to the Ackley.

With these two, you are 100 percent covered.

I should have said must haves for nursing school as far as books go.

What books are good additions to the standard textbooks that you get for nursing school.

Ditto to the Ackley and Ladwig. The BEST! I also use the All-in-One Care Planning Resource by Swearingen.

I really like my school's careplan book: "Nursing Diagnosis Manual; Planning, Individualizing and Documenting Patient Care", by Sheila Doenges. Another good one is "Clinical Applications of Nursing Diagnosis" by Helen Cox.

Supplemental reading? I like the "Made Incredibly Easy" series of books. The ones on Fluids and Electrolytes, Pharmacology, Dosage Calculations and Med/Surg Nursing have helped me a great deal, and I know there are so many more. And it's not too early to consider getting an NCLEX review book; I use mine to supplement my studies for exams. In my opinion, Saunders' is the best.
