Test 1= 90% (worth 10% of grade)

Test 2= 72% (worth 25% of grade)

Test 3=74% (worth 25% of grade)

Test 4= (will be worth 10%)

final= (will be worth 30%)

so what do my next two grades have to be to achieve a 75% to pass this course

(0.1 x 90) + (0.25 x 72) + (0.25 x74) + (0.1 x T4) + (0.3 x F) = 75

9 + 18 + 18.5 + 0.1 x T4 + 0.3 x F = 75

0.1 x T4 + 0.3 x F = 29.5

From here, you need to trial some Test 4 grades in order to determine the required grade on the final...

A spreadsheet helps...

In other words, if you don't take test 4, you'll need 98.3 on the final in order to pass. If you ace test 4, you'll only need a 65 on the final.

You can also turn it around and use the grade on the final as the independent variable from which the required grade on test #4 is derived... it'll obviously be different since the final is weighted three times more than the test.

Holy cow, I just read this thread and... much ado about nothing.

From what I've observed, the simple math required for this problem is beyond the capacity of many, many nurses here and with whom I work. That's neither good nor bad... it just is.

Once I owned my first copy of Lotus 1-2-3, I've always done these calculations... for each possible grade in each course.

Conclude what you want from my determining the minimum required in order to pass... any negative conclusions (a) are probably inaccurate and (b) say more about you than they do about me.

OP, ignore the flames and PM me if you've got more questions or would like this turned around to base it off the final or to determine your possible grade combinations. It only takes but a moment with Excel or the Google docs spreadsheet.

For real, some of you need to find other things to criticize.
