Good day at school.

Passed check out to enter clinicals & realized:

1) I am only qualified right now to take vitals and make beds (bed baths are a little over my head right now) & I am okay with that.

2) Thank god I don't have to worry about catheterizing a real person right now. At check out I had a hell of a time inserting the cath & my sterile technique was pretty shaky. If I were a patient, I wouldn't want anyone near my naughty bits who had a shaking hand.

Talked up allnurses with a coupla classmates & realized, "Uh oh. What if they read my posts and think I'm a total freak." :imbar

They probably already KNOW I'm a freak. Anyway, hello any Fall 2003 ACE students out there.

How well I remember my first round of clinicals! All I can say is that it gets better and better and by the time you are near graduation (I graduate this Dec.) you will look back and be amazed that the *little* things got ya down.

That's not meant to belittle the initial skills you get in the beginning, these are things that will become daily routine and you really are learning so much right now. Get that assessment down pat. Set a goal to assess head to toe in 10 mins, then 5, etc.. You'll make it real soon.

You have so much ahead of you, and many, many times you are going to feel overwhelmed as more skills are learned and expected.

I doubt that there is anything I can say to you right now that will really make you accept the simple fact that you will get better, and that the skills you learn now will become 2nd nature. As much as I would like to give you confidence, I know only experience will suffice. But for now, take my word that by your very last days as a student, you will know so much more, and feel so much better, and you'll actually start to feel more like a real nurse. You still have a long road ahead, but it will be here sooner than you realize, caroline! For now, become a sponge, ask questions, no matter how dumb you think they are, and have fun with it! You'll do fine! Remember also that assessments are very, very important, and take your time honing this skill. It will serve you well.

best of luck to you!:kiss
