Did you take out personal student loans?..

Did any of you have to take out personal student loans and if so with whom? My mother has agreed to be my cosigner and I don't want to automatically go through Sallie Mae if there are better options out there. I'm not requesting tons less than 10,000 to get me through the rest of my nursing program.

I had a private "career training" loan through Sallie Mae for $19,995 with no cosigner. It was originated in 2004 to cover the tuition for a private nonprofit LVN program and has been paid off since 2007.

Other providers of private student loans include Discover, Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, Capital One, and your local credit union.

@thecommuter thank you I will look into one of those companies. I didn't know capitalone offered student loans too, might look into them 1st.

Wow-I didn't know that either. My school offered me a piddly 1,750 per semester:( thats not that helpful sadly.

@Shayboo Is that on top of your federal loans through financial aid? I get 4,750 per semester and that still isn't enough.

I don't think Capital One offers student loans, because I checked and couldn't find one. So I just picked up a second job and I'm just going to have to work hard all summer at both jobs to come up with the remainder for school tuition.

I use Discover Student Loan program...they are easy to work with

I havne't yet but I apply for some just to be safe incase I don't end up getting grant money or scholarships I apply for.

Last semester i was lucky & qualified for the HRSA scholarship for students who fall at least 200% below the poverty line, which for me is like less than 28K or 30K per year I think (this includes just claiming myself as an independent, it's obviously a lot higher if you have children). It's a great scholarship & covers the cost of all tuition plus have a cost of living stipend to help on top of that.

So, if you qualify for this you think I would definitely look into it.
