Books and Financial Aide

Ok after reading lots of posts about first semester nursing books costing 600-1500 dollars, i called the bookstore @ my school to see if mine were going to cost that much. Sure enough she said look to spend around 600-700 on books. I was shocked, even though i read all the posts about book prices i did not think books could cost that much. Now my biggest problem is i quit my job back in June cause i needed to focus on A&P and i had money saved but i paid my rent for the rest of the year with it and the money i have left i pay my bills with. I got tons of financial aide for school for 06'-07' school year, but i think i wont actually get my fall semester money until after the fall semester starts. It starts 09/05/06, and i know i get the loans on 9/15/06 for fall, but I'm not sure when i will get the grants. Now i know i can start class, but can i get books like on credit until my financial aide comes in?? DO schools do this??? I know i should be asking my school but they are closed and, it is hard to get ahold of anyone there in the summer anyway. ANy info any of you may have may be helpful

My school allows students to get books on credit, and they take it out of our financial aid checks when they come in. I just tell them I'm on financial aid and show my school ID when I pick up my books.

Call your school's bookstore and ask. I would think that most schools do.

At my school the financial aid usually post on your account before school begins. As far as books I always get a book voucher from the school through my financial aid. My book voucher posts to my account around three weeks before school starts.

Thanks guys, I am very new to college i just started in Jan so i am figuring out how financial aid and such things work.If they let you take classes and wait for you financial aide to come in i am hoping that they will let me get my books and just deduct it from the financial aide also. The financial aide lady said that Barnes and Noble will be taking over the school bookstore. Is this happening at anyone else's school?

My student loan check comes directly to me, then I use it to pay my bills. That way I can use a credit card, then just pay off the balance when the loan check comes. Other types of aid and don't know about. All the book stores take credit cards. If you get a list of the books with edition number and author, you can search amazon.com, half.com, and barnesandnoble.com and get used book for half price or even less. I NEVER buy a new book unless I have no choice! My book total new was almost $1200, but my total only came to $480 since I got them all used. I buy the cheapest ones I can find, and it really doesn't matter if they are highlighted and written in. I often dismantle the big heavy books with an exacto knife and only carry the chapters I need at the time. If you need the CD that comes with most of the books, be sure to check that before buying. Good Luck!

if you just need a temporary solution, stop by your school's library and see what books they have. you can also ask the professors if they have an extra textbook to lend to you. check with students ahead of you and see if they have any books you can borrow or buy. i just started nursing school in may, and i only spent about 100 dollars for books b/c i got all but 2 or 3 from the library. we had a list of about 10 books. the rest i ordered online. i'm actually happy that i didn't buy them all b/c i'm realized that i only used 2 or 3 books on a regular basis. we were later told that some of the books were "recommended" for reference. make sure you know which textbooks are required and which textbooks can hold off for a few weeks.
