adult development theories - the ultimate goal

this is what I read about adult development theories,
that according to someone by the name of Courtney
describes four characteristics that the theories all have in common.

1. self-identity and growth through developmental tasks
2. hierarchic stages (simple to complex, rigidity to flexible)
3. life span development
4. the ultimate goal of adult development is to achieve autonomy,
separateness, and independence

It is the ultimate goal that I am wondering about.
Not so sure that I agree with this idea that separateness and independence are the ultimate goal. Is it realistic to imagine that a person can be separate and independent? In our lives, just about everything that we do involves other people. It's more like where we hope to draw the lines.
There are other goals.

Just wondering?
