URGENT question about pot smoking please read!

Nurses General Nursing

Hey everyone

I am starting nursing school in two weeks, and I was wondering if they do drug tests before or during the courses.

On occasion, some of my friends and I may smoke up for a bit. harmless, we BARELY do it, maybe a few times a year. BUT, I'm worried that perhaps I'll get screened and be denied into the program or something....

I don't have a criminal record, or anything like that. I'm just wondering if smoking pot could get you a denial into the course.

And to think I'd want someone in the medical profession hooked on dope working on me in a crisis situation. Get a life!

Quite a sweeping, inaccurate, dramatic generalization. Don't worry, yours isn't the only one.

I was surprised when I started nursing how many nurses (of all ages and backgrounds) actually smoke pot from time to time. I agree it has it's side effects, but smoking it several times a year hardly makes someone "hooked on dope."

Smoking pot: to each his own. Smoking pot before going to work: different story.

I agree. I think that is what people are misunderstanding here. We aren't talking about people coming to work stoned or people who partake every day and have developed a dependency. The people who smoke the odd few joints here and there isn't the problem. It's the same with alcohol.

We can thank our great American propoganda machine for the gross misconceptions people have about marijuana. Moderation is key in whatever activity people choose to participate in. Lumping marijuana in with other hard drugs which truly are dangerous and can't be used in moderation is the tactic the gov't has used to scare people. Anyone is better off without alcohol, marijuana or any mind altering substance as the potential for abuse, thus physiological and psychological damage is there, but honest and accurate information about the substance would go alot further IMO when it comes to educating the public about marijuana specifically. Alcohol prohibition didn't work for many of the same reasons that prosecuting those who smoke marijuana isn't working in reducing the use of it. I know this is a debate that can go on forever, but I have to get in my 2 cents. The original poster should never have to worry that smoking marijuana on occasion might jeopardize her chances of joining the profession any more than I worry when I enjoy a few cold beers on occasion.
