Needlesticks

Has anyone ever experienced a needlesstick and would you like to share your story?

The only one I had was a clean needle with NS. I was withdrawing the needle but it slipped and got my finger. I probably should have reported it but it had not been used on a patient and the only person it contacted was me. We now have blunt tip needles to draw up meds and saftey needles/IV's to prevent needle stick injuries.

I was orienting a new tech several years ago and we were starting an IV on a 15 y/o trauma victim. We went over the procedure in detail verbally prior to my trainee's attempt. She got the IV, but in her excitement she got busy talking to the patient and took her eyes off the needle. Holding it between her fingers like a cigarette, she slung it down by her side and directly in to my left hand. OUCH. Luckily this patient turned out not to have anything.
