Considering my RN finally. Why do you do it?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A long time ago I turned a beloved hobby into a career, excelled in both and made myself hate both my hobby and career in the end. I recently became unemployed and have been having a serious crisis about where my life is going.

I thought about Nursing a lot in high school, I wanted to do something that helped people, and a few years ago actually went back to school, I completed a single semester and got my CNA but couldn't return due to a series of tragedies in my personal life. My first job as a CNA was at a premier local facility and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I caught another CNA sleeping on the job, reported it, got retaliated against and quit and had a job at the worst facility in the region the next morning. It wasn't all bad, I got paired with a CNA and a nurse supervisor with only a year of experience who were mentors of sorts. Their professionalism, time management skills, dedication to quality care, and bedside manner made most people at any facility look like an embarrassment. I learned a lot, and it made me really want to be a nurse that much more. I nearly lost a child after my first year and had to quit to be with my wife for a few months in an ICU. Fast forward, our kids are healthy, the debt is gone, and I have a real opportunity to continue what I started or make new opportunities at least. I wanna help people but also view nursing as personally enriching.

I am drawn to nursing for 3 reasons and this is where I'm really looking for advice:

1. The Science

I love science. I have intensity in my soul when it comes to this. I view Nurses as highly educated and would like to elevate my self as far as possible in that regard.

2. The Money

This seems like the more taboo one, but I'll be honest. The financial stability of the avg salary is pretty desirable. I don't wanna get rich.

3. The Diversity of the Field

Nursing has so many specialties I feel like if anyone hates it, it's because they let their opinions of it shape their experience instead of seeing what was out there. I have a particular interest in nursing informatics due to my 10 years in IT.

TLDR

Is doing it for the educational, monetary, or scientific benefit wrong? Why do you do it? How has nursing enriched your life?
