moving to melbourne FL

U.S.A. Florida

hey there!

i just wanna know if there is someone here who is from melbourne florida. my husband and i will be moving there soon. i'll be working at holmes regional medical center and it'll be a BIG help if someone can give me a brief (or a detailed one would be much better ) "orientation" about melbourne and this hospital where i will be working. i have checked the internet but hearing it from someone else also matters..

thanks a lot!

We are not color coded on our floor, but have been warned that once we move to the new hospital we will be color coded. As I understand it, the Palm Bay Community Hospital is color coded. So we will wait and see.

thanks for your reply. by new hospital, do you mean the new wing that will be finished by september?

Hi-

I dont' live in the same area as you are moving but just like NewJack, I have lived in New England and here. I've been here for 4 years and although I love the "tropical-ness" (I made that word up, clearly) of Florida, I don't necessarily LOVE the weather. The summers are so hot you can't be outside, unless you're at the beach but the winters are nice because they are cool, but not freezing. I will agree with NewJack about crime in Florida. Florida is like the hotspot for every criminal and sexual predator and pervert teacher is more likely to go to. You will hear the WEIRDEST stories down here....I never locked my door when I lived in Florida or Massachusetts or Maine, but never go without locking it now. Here I fear for car accidents (I bet they beat your filipino friends) for bad driving and crime as well. You can live in a beautiful neighborhood and suddenly there are home invasions going on and just horrible things. I've not felt safe since living here...but I love nature and love being able to go to the beach whenever and playing outside with my daughter year round (but not in the front yard, those dang sexual predators will get to us). Seriously, I know I sound very paranoid but when the city channel plays pictures of sexual offenders living in the city to Christmas music you have to wonder (yes Largo does do this). I can't wait to get my RN and move back to NH or MA where at least if they want to commit crime they have to trudge through 2 feet of snow to get to me.

sounds very depressing to me....hmmm...but then again, you can never be 100% safe anywhere. ;)

thanks for this bit of info. will keep it in mind.

thank you for the warm welcome! we will be arriving in florida on july 7 already -- thats just a week from now! im starting to get excited and a bit anxious too... we wont be going right away to melbourne but rather, we go first to clearwater since that is where our agency's office and staffhouse is based. we stay there for about 2 weeks for orientation and stuff before they fly us to melbourne. then they'll help us look for an apartment and after that, we're on our own...

this has been such a great help to us. for all who posted their replies, THANKS A GAZILLION!!! :smiley_aa

Hey,

I grew up in Melbourne (and Grant/Palm Bay), and now live in Pensacola. Hope you enjoy working and living there.

hi there! we are now here in melbourne. love it, so far... we havent been around much (dont have a car yet) but hopefully when we do get a car, we can get to all the beautiful places and see the beaches. we have yet to start work this monday at HRMC, we had our orientation already last week and it went along well. we dont have hospitals THIS big in our country so we were kinda overwhelmed by it all. the weather is so much like ours, so no big adjustment there. maybe not that much lightning and thunderstorms though. hehehe..
