All:

- How receptive are hospitals in allowing a total "novice/outsider" shadowing a nurse for a day?

- Any one do this? If so, can you elaborate?

- Any helpful comments/stories/suggestions would be appreciated?

- Again, thanks in advance.

I don't know about other hospitals, I can only speak of the ones in which I have worked.

We welcome shadowing-both by potential RN applicants and by persons interested in the profession. We do however have a confidentiality statement which needs to be read and signed, and also a need for documentation of immunization.

same as gardengal, we welcome shadow experiences of either nursing students or interested persons. confidentiality statements are signed and patients are always asked before hand if they mind the person watch their care.

I shadowed several different places. I never had to sign confidentiality agreements or anything, but I also shadowed at the university hospital where I was attending school. Anyway, the areas were very receptive to shadowing. I did find though that the community hospital I called about shadowing was less than receptive, so possibly the large teaching institutions are more accustomed to having nursing students.
