Kaiser Externship

Nurses New Nurse

I have an interview with Kaiser in a few weeks for a Nursing externship position on an ambulatory care unit. What is ambulatory care exactly, from my research it seems like it is an outpatient setting. also does anyone know is kaiser is a paid externship in the san diego area ?

Did you figure out the answers to your questions? Mine are the same.

I was wondering how is the outpatient externship. How many days/hours a week? Is it paid? What kind of ambulatory settings? What interview questions do they ask. I'm hoping someone here will know the answers.

Hi guys,

Did you guys had you interview already? Mine was yesterday

Hello there. First off I wanted to start by saying that it is an unpaid externship. I was an extern at Kaiser from 2016-2017 at Zion and I did ambulatory care at Vandever as well as Acute care in the ICU and DOU. My summer externship was at the Nurse's clinic and at first I was bummed because I wanted to be in the hospital, but It was actually a lot of fun and the staff is amazing. They give their externs so much independence and make you feel like you're the one in charge. Theres A LOT of wound dressing changes, vaccinations, rapid strep test and STDs. Every extern I have talked to love Urgent Care and the Women's Clinic too. After each semester, you're automatically guaranteed a spot in the externship for the following semester. As Summer ends, make sure to verbalize your desires to work on a different unit if that is what you want. I really wanted to be in the hospital after the Nurses Clinic and I wanted to be in Critical Care. I started in the ICU for my fall externship and that was amazing! Again, the nurses treat you like you're part of the team and theres so much independence. You have pyxis access and can pull meds without the RN, your RN just has to sign for the meds in the patients room. I got to be part of the Rapid Response team several times and go on calls.

Also, it is required by the education department that you do at least 120 hours a semester, but I always went as much I could because its such an advantage as a student. I did almost 300 hours during the summer because I had nothing else going on in my life.

Hello - Wondering if you can PM me some details on how the process was when you applied? I'd love to apply for their externship as I will be eligible to start in the summer as well. However I am in an ABSN program, and do have a full Summer and following Fall semester. Therefore I'd likely only be able to do the minimum 120 hrs each.

Does anyone know the answer to this? Does Kaiser only hire new nurses and CNAs for ambulatory care and outpatient services? This is what I have heard from some of my professors

That's not true. I work in a kaiser outpatient clinic and they hire new grads and veteran nurses.
