Discouraged new RN

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I can read threads until I'm blue in the face in search of comfort that I am not the only new RN on a medsurg floor who loathes her job and going to work but at the end of it all (because there are many threads on this topic) I am the only one struggling through my14-15 hour shift. I feel so alone.

I have applied and applied other places but no one wants a measly ADN RN without experience. All the tears and almost failed marriage through nursing school and now I hate my job more than any mean nursing instructor or long study nights. Does it get better? I've been at a teaching hospital for 4 months and I hate it!

I too am a new grad RN so I can empathize in some ways. I too hate going to my job and feel totally discouraged. I started out in Corrections but left after 4 months and am now in a SNF. I often feel like I made a huge mistake becoming a nurse. I just keep telling myself that it does get better. I can't give any advice but know than you are not alone and just keep pushing on. Best of wishes.

Keep your head up! I don't even have a job yet. I have been trying and trying to no avail. I had one call for a phone screening and they told me they preferred someone with more experience rather than a new grad. It hurt, but it's a step in the right direction. Baby steps count for something. There is a light at the end of that tunnel, I believe it. Always remember why you wanted to become a nurse. Never give up on your hopes and dreams. You may feel like you are drowning, but someone is going to throw you a rope! You are not alone. Have faith and stay hopeful!

I'm a new grad & have been working at my facility for only 3 months. Some days, it's so hard because there IS so much you don't know. Finding people to help and answer questions isn't always easy either. I was let off orientation 4 weeks early (we do 8 to 12 week orientation and I was let off right at 8 weeks cuz everyone felt I no longer need it). Some days, I regret that decision..especially when docs say things that make me feel stupid cuz I'm new. But...it isn't always bad. I work with a great team that keeps an eye out for each other as much as possible..and my boss is absolutely amazing & tries her hardest to listen to us & fix things when she can. So to say every hospital or every medsurg floor is bad...it isn't. Is it busy? Yes..is it hard? OH yes..especially for new grads..but there are better facilities out there..With great teams to help you along. Just keep looking for those. Ask around if anyone you know would recommend where they work because I would. And..many of patients thank me..ALL the time. I've gotten many many hugs..much appreciation from them just because they could see I cared & I always maintained a positive attitude with them. And at the end of the day, that is a large part of why I went into nursing..and it truly makes your day when that happens. :)

Nursing is a tough job...more than I thought it was (and I never thought it was "easy")..but I just live for the rewarding moments like those and remind myself that it'll get better with time. My hospital recently started a new grad "support group" where we go once a month to try and learn lesser used skills, talk about any issues & make suggestions for improvement. I feel that helps some too. Suggest that to the powers that be at your facility & maybe it'll help you too. :)

Keep your head up...keep smiling and just do your very best..that's all u can do. And like someone else said:nursing is a 24 hour job...get what you can get done...If u can't, the next shift has a shot too. There will be plenty of times where you're given tasks from their shift as well.
