Here's my question: My patient has a Docusate Sodium capsule (Colace) and an OGTube. As an ICU nurse I see this all the time- I'm currently working with one of the pharmacist to make it a protocol at our hospital that patients with an NGT or OGT receive the suspension.

What are my fellow nurses' thoughts on this? Is the Colace capsule even effective once it is popped with a needle or cut open? They're surely not receiving a very accurate dose if that is the case.

Why don't you just get the Dr to change the order to liquid or see if pharmacy can change it to liquid? I have never popped a colace, I just always get it switched. The only med I ever pop is Renagel cause I don't believe it is available in liquid form
