I'm a R.N. in Louisiana with 15 years experience in Psychiatric nursing. I just took a job as D.O.N. of a Correctional facility (Sheriff's Office) and I'd like to find more information about professional organizations as well as to communicate with others in this specialty. I've just started the job but I think I'm going to like it. It's got enough routine to be a job and enough excitement to make me want to go to work.

The National Association of Correctional Nursing is a new organization which is planning to create a certification exam for correctional nurses. They are offering free membership. You'll find them at www.correctionalnursing.org

Sounds like a great idea. However the link to get there is dead. Is there more, I am interested.

I am currently working on my BSN and chose correctional nursing as my topic. I am looking for information on the history of correctional nursing, requirements, specific challenges, and the difference in care of prisoners in the prison vs the hospital. I appreciate any leads.

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care NCCHC has a wealth of information available. They also have a certification program available for healthcare professionals. Good luck in your new position. I have been the Health Services Director (DON) for Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office for 10 years now. Welcome to the ranks:)
