I'm currently a nursing student in southern Ohio and I'm looking at going into a state or federal prison once I graduate. Either Lebanon or around that area. I'm looking to get an insite on the workings of the the Ohio prisons and what the day to day is like and what I can look forward to as far as pay, benifits, and vaction times.
Hey supe. I worked Ohio prisons via agency for quite a while, and saw inside 6-7 of them. They always need people, so should be easy to get a job. Jhaco does not go there, so standards are different. Always understaffed and agency staffed. It is dangerous-expect 1-2 guards for 700 guys in the yard. Expect 1 guard at night for a dorm with 200-300 guys in. you may man the pill window and pass on 1000 people morning, noon and hs. you may stroll through the hole for a pass, or you may examine new inmates. you will get pulled to do 2 or 3 jobs at a time. the guards rule the place, and if they like you, they will get your back, if they don't, they may set you up. the good part? its exciting. like an er for very under served population. LOTS of psych-prison is where they keep crazy people in ohio. lots of emergency triage. You can be mandated, and if the prison goes on lockdown, you are there for the duration. No one in, no one out. Gov. Kasich has cut guards since I have been there, so it is even more dangerous now. Many of the inmates have never had healthcare. You will get very good at assessing, since everyone is lying and working you for something. When they see a new nurse, they will try to run every thing on you, and try to get something out of you just because, so start with your game face and learn to have a biiiig front. I liked working in prison, and you may, too. Good luck!
