Specialties Correctional

Hello! I am a new correctional nurse in a small (120 bed) county jail. I'm looking for any assistance on the daily routine(ish). I am having a hard time organizing my day. I am only here 32 hours a week...6.5 hours a day. between the sick calls, detox, vitals, outcome studies, health histories, CQI reports, chronic clinic, blood draws, intake, ect...I'm running out of time in a day. I hate leaving knowing there was more that could be done. Any ideas on how to best prioritize my day?

Just prioritize the best you can. Then if that doesn't,t work keep trying different ways or get suggestions from others you work with or those here on line that are in similar jobs.As a med surg nurse I like most nurses feel like we could have done more but that,s the nature of the beast.Best of luck!

I just started a corrections job too. I like to get med pass out of the way, do intake/detox, then go to sick call cases. I find I am doing a lot of chasing around of behavioral health and other specialties.

I am a RN to a 90-105 inmate jail, 85% male, 25% female. our clinic runs 7-10 M-F. I alternate 7-3 with another nurse who works 2-10. We work together very well. Our main priorities revolve around the med cart and sick call on Tuesdays. On Monday we pull all the sick call slips, pull the charts, fill out all the info. We use a mom and pop pharmacy and have to fax over any inmate who needs a refill request. We stock up the med cart w/ OTC and diabetic supplies. Tues is Dr call, everything goes around that and the 3 med passes of the day, at 9, 5, 9 pm. invairiably there is always someone who needs something extra or to be evaluated after med pass. the day nurse deals with a lot of coordination of care w. outside specialists, medicating inmates before court, screening new and out processing thoses who are leaving or being transferred. Tues. we transcribe orders.bWednesday we pull labs and and outside X-ray. Thursday is when we focus on Chronic care issues and Friday is all about getting ready for the 'weekenders' we will be up front in the hiding cell and needs meds packed, and getting the cart stocked and ready for the deputies for the weekend. There is always filing to be done. Mental health/SA comes Wednesday and Thursday. It is a busy pace, always something going on. the acuity changes alter the stress level too. out sharp count is once a month. We buy from Walmart about once a month and order supplies about once a month. It seems like a lot of our time deals with straightening out the pharmacy issues, and billing recovery.

I'm the only nurse there. We have the CO's pass meds...once they go through med training. Tuesday is mental health day so I work around that. My day usually consists of coming in at 8, pulling the sick calls seeing those that need to be seen, answering the ones I can. Then go onto ordering meds, calling the doctor, placing any orders from her, stocking the cart. Filling always needs to be done. I'm only contracted for 32 hours week. I am always trying to fins the time go include chronic clinic and cqi paperwork. Some days I get overwhelmedd...but I wouldn't give if up for anything
