Just wondering if there are any innovative nurse based programs in correctional facilities to help keep family ties intact. Also, are there any programs that demonstrate helpful post incarceration reentry into society?

From my experience, that would all fall under social work and/or psych. Medical is too, too busy with just Medical.

I agree, but I was wondering how much community nurses actually get involved.

I don't know of any correctional facilities with "community nurses". Kat's response is dead on. That falls under the realm of social work in the jail and prison settings.

Ah...I think I may understand...you might be referring to the job title of "public health" nurse. Could this be it?

If so, the Public Health nurse in the correctional system is not geared toward the social services/family stuff.

They are strictly concerned with the medical end of things as far as TB tests, consultations and treatment protocols for those that test positive for TB, STD's, etc. And outbreaks of parsitic diseases such as scabies, viruses such as chicken pox which can play hell with the population of HIV and other immuno-comprimised patients, etc. etc. etc.

No social work there. Does this help answer your question? As the other poster said, I have never seen a job description in corrections for "community nurse".
