Need advice because I am just starting out. Tell me everything you possibly can because I want to make great CNA's. I love CNAs and want to start them off on the right foot. I think they are the most important staff for a resident's quality of life.

I love when instructors are hands on and personable. I dislike when instructors are dry, lecture the whole class, and don't review key points.

Any examples of things they did hands on? I have purchased a few items so that they can do some hands on with heart and hemovacs. I brought in a foley and let them practice when we were studying urine system. They like it when I give them questions, so I have tons of questions on my powerpoints (more than we have time for). And I am also going to get an I clicker for them to participate. I need more examples, you have been so very helpful!!! THanks!!!!!

Was there anything about clinical that helped you learn better? Anything that your instructors did?

I like the clicker idea. We practiced skills a lot on each other and got a feel for how residents feel. An example is that with the feeding portion, we fed each other thickened liquids. We were right next to the nursing home so we went and did scavenger hunts to get familiar with the facility and we met and spoke to residents. Bringing in a foley is smart, I had no idea how to empty it until I was actually working as a CNA.

My instructors were easily accessible so I was able to finish what I needed check marked faster and was able to do skills on my own faster. Being able to work independently but knowing my instructor was nearby to help was really good and made me feel confident :)
