health unit coordinator class

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I am fixing to take this class in about two weeks. I am already cna certified. I want to get a job working on the floor as a secratary. Has anyone else done this. I do not want to go into nursing any further. But want to do something to help people. Can anyone give me a idea as to what i am getting into. thanks

Without knowing more about this class, I don't think it's a bad idea if what you want to do is be a unit clerk, but if you have basic clerical and computer skills and medical terminology, you may not need it. I was a unit clerk for 5 years and had no prior experience in the medical field, although I did have a pretty good command of medical terminology. I'm still a unit coordinator, but my unit is not a treatment unit so I don't do admissions, discharges or maintain charts. I "moonlight" as a CNA (Mental Health Tech) and make more money doing that. Unit clerks are very important, and very busy, but with your background as a CNA, formal training might be a waste of money if you're good with a computer and know how to type, file, and answer the phone.
