Georgetown Online Midwife/Women's Health

Specialties CNM

Hey everyone,

So I'm getting pretty nervous here. A couple of things, first my GPA is only a 3.6 and my science GPA is 3.5. I'm worried these aren't nearly competitive enough for the program. Second, I have a letter of recommendation from a FNP I've shadowed and one from a former professor. However, I can't seem to shadow a CNM or WHNP due to my night shifts. Unfortunately, my hospital is extremely busy right now and it is difficult to switch back to days in order to spend the day in a clinic then convert back to nights. My advisor states that not having a letter from a APRN in the field I'm applying into may be a problem. Should I just give up on NM/WHNP and apply into FNP instead then get my post-masters in my specialty?

I feel like my application may be a little weak in comparison to others and am worried so much about these recommendations as being the make it or break it for me.

Any guidance or suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks,

Diana

I did an info-seeking email to this program 2 days ago. They called me the next day. They seemed to think my gpa was strong enough and that they could/would take me without any experience working as a nurse (so far) which I found flat out amazing. I haven't found, yet, what the current requirements of needing a recommendation are. I'm supposed to talk with them again tomorrow. Frankly, I'm a little astounded by the entire phone call. A clinical instructor had told me there is very little demand for CNMs in the DC/NoVA/SoMD area and that's part of why I'd not been pursuing this -- I know we'll likely never move away from here and no one wants to drop any kind of money on a graduate program that won't perform with a paycheck.

Can anyone else speak to their requirements or how difficult it is to get in ... or get a preceptor? I was very dismayed to read you might get put on hold for lack of a preceptor.

I've heard mixed reviews about Georgetown. Mainly frustration with clinical site placement - or non-placement.

I heard back from them a 2nd/3rd time and basically, they'll take any related experience, which includes as a doula or homebirth worker, they will take you immediately out of BSN program if you have any reasonable experience with birth.

However, the price tag on this program, quoted to me by their admin is:

$89,000

I really had to struggle not to laugh. I politely ended that phone call as quickly as possible. I can't justify that on a CNM.

I know I am about a year and half past this post of responding, but just wanted to get some feedback....I will graduate with my BSN in April, and was hoping to continue right after I graduate. Are you liking the program? Does it seem very competitive? I am very interested in applying, but would love to hear feedback about Georgetown's program.

I called Georgetown just a few days ago and spoke with an admissions advisor-what a disappointment. The advisor was unable and unwilling to share even the most basic of information with me. I asked about the median GPA's of admitted students, how they calculate the science GPA and how they set up clinical placements. She just told me over and over that she was "only an admissions advisor" and that her job was not to provide the information I was asking for but to help me "make the strongest application possible." Excuse me, but why should I pay all that money and subject myself to the stress of a video interview if I can't even get some basic info? I'm not going to apply to a program if I won't be a strong applicant. My cumulative GPA is 3.75 which is more than respectable but I was a little worried about my science GPA. I took Anatomy, Physiology and Micro and got an A, B and C respectively-I'm not at all sure how that would stack up.

I then gave Samuel Merritt University (SMU) a call about their online FNP program and the experience was totally different! The woman I spoke with was warm and welcoming and made me feel totally at ease. She answered all my questions and when I had a very specific one about clinical placement she sent me an email only 10 minutes later with the answer. She also sent me an email with about a dozen links which lists absolutely everything you could ask, including median GPA's of admitted students, breakdown of faculty education (percentage of those with DNP vs MSN) and tons of other stuff. Also, there are NO campus visits! I live in Silicon Valley so going up to Oakland (35 miles north) wouldn't be a great hardship, but it's still a big plus. The cost is $69,000 which is only about $10,000 cheaper than Georgetown but the vibe and welcoming attitude is 100% better. Also, they only use the cumulative GPA :)

I am excited about applying and hopefully attending the online FNP program at SMU. It's not the WHNP program I was hoping for but not having to fly to DC, not having to attend live video lectures (seriously, how was I going to fit that in with my schedule???), and them being so warm and welcoming has left me feeling good about my decision. As far as Georgetown goes, well, it would have been a dream to attend such a prestigious university but I really didn't appreciate asking for very basic information and them reacting like I was asking for proprietary, confidential, restricted information. It's GPA's we're talking here, not missile launch codes, lol. It almost makes me feel as if they have something to hide... SMU, here I come!

I know this was back in 2013 but I was wondering what type of background you had prior to applying.

I also have a 3.2-3.3 gpa, my bachelors in nursing, graduated on the provost list my final semester in nursing (but had a really rough start at the beginning of nursing school (had to take pathophysiology twice). I have been a nurse for a year now though and have worked at one of the biggest womens hospitals in the states (Winnie Palmer in orlando)I feel that I am not competitive enough regardless of all this. I feel that my GPA and repeated course will count against me. Any advice would be great! I would love to apply to the women's health NP program starting this January!
