alrighty.. i have been on my cardiac surgical unit oreinting now for 6 weeks, and while everyday amazing at all there is to learn i am more amazing by the level of knowledge of the cardiac nurses around me!!! Its sooo intimidating being a new grad cuz u feel so inadequte around all these knowledable people. The nurses i work with always seem to be able to predict whats going on with the patient.. they tell the PA's whats up with the patients .. what they think they need for orders and tests, and lots of times they are telling the docs that they think someone isnt doing well and that they might benefit from this certain drug or treatment. Or they seem to know at 7 am that a certain patient "looks bad and like he may be getting a pericardial effusion " and that he will definately end up in the OR at 5 pm that night....

its sooo cool. I am sure you experienced nurses are thinking well yeah duh.. thats our job

but i think cardiac nurses really know there stuff... hopefully one day i will be one of those nurses:kiss

I also worked on a Cardiac unit when I first got out of school. It meant I was a "Real Nurse" I tried for a year to understand the strips (never did) and find my niche. It was very frustrating, I know I am not dumb- but I just could not get it.

I finally gave up and went back to my first love-Geriatrics.

There is alot I know about Geriatric nursing that those "Smart" nurses would not have a clue about. We are all Smart, capable in our own areas. Don't feel like you won't succeed, if it's an area you love, then you will be just like those other Smart nurses in no time. Good luck:)
