Nursing Unions in the Bay Area

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi all,

I'm still a nursing student so I'm a bit clueless when it comes to the whole nursing unions thing. I'm particularly interested in how unions work at places like Santa Clara Valley Medical Center since it's a large county hospital.

First off, are you required to join a union?

Secondly, what kinds of unions are out there in the Bay Area for public hospitals?

Thirdly, do they restrict nurses from going to things such as nursing support groups (like let's say, something to destress from work)?

The reason I ask is because I'm coming up with a hypothetical nurse work-life balance support group for a class project and I just wanted to make sure that if something like that came up, like a monthly 1-1.5 hr support group meeting, on-site at the hospital, for any RN to attend, if there'd be any type of potential conflict with the unions? I have no clue if there'd be any problems but perhaps some of the more experienced of you could chime in and give me some insight...

ANYTHING WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
