ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make :uhoh3:, i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry:crying2: .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

I agree with NursingApplicant... that better not be true because I made a LOT of changes based on the fact that Mayo was taking people for summer. I wasn't going to apply unless Mayo was an option. I'll be very upset with ASU if that is the case. They shouldn't go telling students that Mayo has 20 spots if they aren't for sure. And I can't see a place like the Mayo Clinic backing out right before applications are due.

Has anyone else been able to confirm if it is true that Mayo is not taking students for summer?

Don't believe everything you hear online- I just called them- its not true. Mayo has 20 seats and Downtown has 80 seats...

:w00t:

Thank you so much Jeremy!

That's why I asked if anyone else had been able to confirm that fact... I was hoping the person who told us that had either been misinformed or misunderstood their adviser.

That puts a lot of worries to rest. I'm really counting on the Mayo program for many different reasons and would be very disappointed if the Mayo seats were cut.

Oh my gosh EMTJeremy.... thanks so much for checking. I almost had a heart attack right now. I would have been super upset if this were true. Not that it that it makes my score look that much better lol :lol2: but, ya know, 20 more spots definitely help.

Sorry, when should we hear back regarding if we got in, March or April, or sooner?

Oh yeah... good job NursingStudent21 on your TEAS! An 87% is awesome! :)

The application packet said we should hear back in April... and knowing ASU I doubt they'll be very fast about any of this.

This is gonna be the longest 90+ days of my (our) life (lives). My apartment lease is up in May so I need to know if I'm gonna be staying at ASU or going up to NAU. If I don't get in, I'd rather move to Flag and enjoy a cooler summer up there.

I'm still slightly concerned about the Mayo Clinic rumor... I talked to some classmates after I read that post and a few of them said they've heard the same thing. It's making me very nervous. And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if ASU did something like this last minute, ya know? I feel like ASU has a habit of changing things last minute and then they suck at officially informing us of these changes. Most of the things I've heard about the program and changes made to it were first through rumor and then ASU would announce it days or weeks later. I just hate how unorganized this application process is because it leaves room to wonder and worry! Sorry, I'm totally venting... but this no Mayo Clinic program thing is really stressing me out!

Jeremy, who did you talk to when you called? Was it just the person at the front desk or was it an adviser? I'm curious because if it was just the front desk person, I worry that she could have not yet been informed of a change... unless she checked directly with an adviser before answering your question?

I think I'm probably going to go into the advising office and try to speak to an actual adviser about this... I don't feel like waiting and worrying for the next few weeks about a rumor that may or may not be true. And if it is true, I don't want to have to wait for weeks until they get around to telling us all. I'm sure they're probably going to avoid it as long as possible if the Mayo Clinic program has been cut because they know there will be many very upset students. They're so slow with any and all information on the application process. I seriously don't understand why it takes them over 2 months to let us know whether or not we have been accepted to the program. The longest part of the process is checking to make sure the applications are complete and check transcripts and TEAS scores... but after that it shouldn't take any time at all. Seriously, how hard is it to make a list of applicants from highest to lowest advancement scores and take the top 100 and send out letters?

And if the Mayo Clinic isn't taking students over the summer, I want to be able to re-figure out my plans and I would also like to find out the next semester the Mayo Clinic will be admitting students into their program.

Anyone else at all concerned with this rumor or feel the same way about this whole application process?

Yes energizerbunny19!!!! I am definitely worried. For me, Mayo was not my first choice due to location; however, cutting seats, no matter what location it might be at, all means the same thing in the end= less people getting in! I can see how this worries you because it seems that all of us at ASU always need to plan our lives around the nursing program and making adjustments to our plans every time ASU decides to make a change(or at least that's what's been going on with me)! I mean 20 less people is a lot (to me)... man, even 5 less could be make or break for 5 students that have been waiting for so long! I know exactly how you feel! I constantly vent about what ASU is doing. How hard is it to make a plan and stick to it! We had the NET, now we have the TEAS. We had seats available at the ASU West campus when I was a freshmen and sophmor, then those got cut. Then there was supposed to be an interview along with the application process and they were going to look at volunteer work you have been involved in... then, a couple of months later, that whole thing got scratched. Oh yea, and then there was the big change that will start with the Fall 2011 with the whole multipliers for your GPA thing.... and now cutting seats... again? See where I'm going with this? I mean come on, some consistency would be nice. I mean they expect near perfection from us, can't we get some of the same from them.

Again, just like energizerbunny19, I don't mean to keep rambling on about this, but it's just not right to keep us in the dark. I don't see why some student would just all of a sudden make up a rumor about this, without actually getting some sort of hint that it might be happening from someone in the nursing office. If it helps...

As soon as I heard this, I emailed two advisors (since two is better than one, I figured :uhoh3:). I simply stated that I heard some info about this and wanted to know if any of it was true. The response I got was one of those that are super short and open to interpretation, or at least I thought so. It went like this: "The latest information that I have is that there will be Mayo spots for the summer 2011." Sooooo...I'm thinking, does that mean that there's something in the works that will possibly cut those seats?.... Of course, being worried, I asked that question also. I got a reply saying something along the lines of "students requesting advancement for summer would be notified of this change if it does happen." Right, and let me guess, we'll wait till the middle of April to do that too!

Ugh, just frustrating. I know that it's not the end of the world, but it gets tiring after a while to have to adjust to change after change. Again, don't mean to complain, but I know that's what I ended up doing.

I am dropping off my application tomorrow morning. I'll try to get more info from an advisor and keep you guys posted if I hear anything.

Haha wow, you're right. That answer is extremely open for interpretation. Like I said, if they do know of a change, they probably "aren't allowed" or simply don't want to tell us until absolutely necessary or until they make an official announcement or something. That e-mail basically sounded like there were no promises... that there might be changes or there might not be. Ugh. ASU is not good at yes or no answers! And so the waiting begins...

I dropped my application off today. So I asked the receptionist at the front desk if she had heard about this rumor. She said she had and that it's simply not true. She said that they had a staff meeting recently and the director of the nursing department said there will be 80 spots at Downtown and 20 at Mayo. She sounded really confident and didn't give me the type of broad answer that makes you wonder whether it's really true or not. She said that she doesn't see how this would be fair to the students that have made plans to go to Mayo. I agree. Hopefully, this helps a bit and hopefully, it's the truth and ASU doesn't just spring this change on us sometime in March or April!

That's definitely what I like to hear! :) At least someone's on our side!
