ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

U.S.A. Arizona

hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make :uhoh3:, i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry:crying2: .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

I know that the student loans through the government won't be enough for me to be able to pay for the summer program... and I never qualify for any grants, unfortunately. However, I'm thinking I'm going to have to get a private school loan as well.... like through a local bank, since that will fill in the gap that federal student loans will leave. If you think you might go that route also, just make sure you do some research and pick the best choice out there (ya know, lowest interest, appropriate payback term)..... and most of them, not all, don't make you start paying back the loan until 6 months after graduation, just like the federal student loans. Hope that helps a little. I'm hoping there will be some scholarships I might qualify for if I get accepted for the summer program, but I'm pretty sure that's not gonna happen!

Even though GPA counts for 2/3 of the advancement score, what you get on the TEAS also makes a huge difference. A 10% difference in scores on the TEAS is a .2 difference in your overall advancement score. So if you get a 90% and someone with a 4.0 gets an 80%, you'll basically have the same advancement score.

I believe in you! :) You can do it! With 100 spots for summer, I'm thinking if you at least score in the very high 80s, you'll make it in. There's a lot of people who just don't want to pay the summer tuition rates and like to have summer's off...

Keep me posted on how the studying is coming! Let me know how the TEAS go for you. I'm sure you'll do great. I'm a chronic worrier just like you. I stress over everything and always feel unprepared (seriously.. I was so nervous for the TEAS, I puked before going to take the test! haha) but in the end, I always end up doing WAY better than I expected. The toughest section on the test is science, by far, because it covers such a broad range of topics. When you take the test, try not to second guess yourself... you're first instinct is usually right! Good luck!

Are you taking classes this semester?

Hey there :)

No, I am not taking any classes this semester because all my pre-reqs are done and I didn't see the point in spending money on classes I don't need, ya know?

So I hope that I can score in the high 80's as well! I am really scared though because I just took the first practice test online from ATI (granted, I have not yet studied for the science section at all, but the suspense was killing me and I wanted to gauge where I was at with the other subjects for all the time I have spent studying) and I ended up

getting a 68% on the first practice test. :smackingf:smackingf:smackingf

I am super scared now. I mean I have heard that the practice tests are harder supposedly, but did you take any through the ATI website, and if so.... how did you do. I would really appreciate any input. The science is was brought my score down of course, but even the reading, math, and english portions were only in the low to mid 80's for me......I swear the subject-verb agreement stuff will be the end of me!

I guess it's back to studying and then taking the second practice test on the night before the big day!!!!! I take the TEAS on 1/27.

Hey there!

Yeah I took the online practice tests as well... they are a little bit harder than the real tests, but I thought they were WAY more similar to the real TEAS than the practice tests they have in the study manual. I got a 80% on the first practice test and an 83% on the second one. So I did 10% better on the real thing than what I got on the practice tests.

The science is what brought down my score as well... I thought the science part was pretty difficult just because it covers such a broad range of topics. As for the real tests, it was definitely the subject-verb agreement questions that brought my score down!

Has anyone had discussions with the advisers as to what they think the tread will be with the Summer 2011 cutoff score? Based on the post from page 1, the score is slightly moving up each semester (Summer 2010 = 5.447, Fall 2010 = 5.569 and Spring 2011 = 5.597). I would be curious to know what is influencing this. Given there are more available slots, I would assume the score would go down compared to Spring 2011. However, maybe there are more applicants due to the changes in the Fall of 2011, which will offset this. Does anyone have thoughts, regardless if this came directly from an adviser or not?

I don't know... I sure hope that there is a decline in the the scores though. I know that last semester, students had the opportunity to take the TEAS twice for one application period, since it was the first semester it was being used (from what I can remember). I know that many of the students that got into the Spring 2011 got a much better score the second time around on the TEAS test. Maybe this is driving it? I know that if I had the chance to take it again, I'd probably get a little bit of a higher score. Unfortunately, I don't get to do this and I am taking the TEAS tomorrow morning. I'm literally sick to my stomach just thinking about getting anything less than an 89%. Since spring's cutoff was 5.597, getting anything lower than an 89% would mean I'm not competitive enough (seeing how I have a 3.81 gpa).

All I know is that I really, I mean really, hope that there aren't that many applicants this cycle. Wish there was a way to know.... a girl can dream though ;)

Hi all,

I spoke with an adviser last week and she thought about 200 students have shown interest by way of the participants at the mandatory information sessions. As to how many actually apply, she does not know. Has anyone else heard anything? Good news is there are 100 slots available, which helps to some degree.

Good luck nursingstudent21 on the teas tomorrow!! Let us know how you do! :) I'm sure you'll do fine! Take deep breathes and don't throw up in the morning before the test like I did. That's no fun. Eat a good breakfast and relax.

Also, I don't think there will be 200 students applying... the cost of summer tuition was cause for concern for many people. I'm gonna take a guess and say that not everyone who went to the info sessions are going to apply. I sure hope not anyway...

Just so no one gets their facts wrong, Spring 2011 did not get to take the test twice. That was Fall 2010. Our select GPA was the highest of all the groups so far (they are telling us anyway:rolleyes:), and I think our TEAS average was about the same as Fall 2010 who got to take the test twice.

Remember, you will also have re-applicants looking to get in the summer who maybe missed the Spring cutoff and they have had a semester to boost their GPA and can also retake the TEAS test as it is a new cycle period. Maybe the people you talked to about getting a much higher score the second time around were re-applicants because I sure know they told me I wasn't allowed to retake it!

I don't mean to squash all hopes, you seem to have been working super hard on studying for the TEAS and I bet you did great (and I hope you did because you seem like a person fit for nursing).

Good luck to you nursingstudent21 and good luck to everyone else on this thread! :)

I took my TEAS on Monday and turned in my app yesterday. Select GPA- 3.81, TEAS- 82.7 for a total of 5.464. I was definitely hoping for something a little higher on the TEAS, but I'm just not good with aptitude tests :/

So we'll see what happens!! Good luck and many Blessings to you all!!

I was told by my adviser the other day that there are now only 80 spots available because Mayo is no longer taking on students for the summer program :(

Ug!!

I hope that is incorrect because people are making life decisions based on the fact that Mayo would have been an option.

How quickly are they getting the results back based on previous semesters? Basically, I am curious to find out how long we have to wait in order to find out if we got in.

So.... I just got back from my TEAS test. I got an 87.3%. It's definitely not what I had expected when I first started studying to the test, but I am surprised that I got anything over an 82% after being so stressed out and sick about it. Overall, I'm pretty okay with my score though. I did pretty much all I could. With my low gpa of 3.81 and my TEAS at 87.3%, that puts me at a total score of 5.556 :uhoh21: I don't know how the summer will play out, but I know that would not have been enough for the spring 2011. But, like I said, I did all I could and now I'm just going to wait it out and pray that things work out in my favor :saint:

It seems that everyone has heard different stories on here... one advisor said this, the other said that, who know what to believe anymore. I guess we'll all know once the letter comes.

Mayo is getting cut?!?!?!?!:confused::confused: This really makes me upset if it's true. Are they ever going to stop changing things on us around here! I mean that's 20 less people getting in... and what about the people whose first choice was Mayo altogether? This is crazy....
