U.S.A. Alabama

questions questions questions!!!

I am applying to 6 different nursing schools for the fall (Lawson, Bevill, Jeff Gadsden, Central Alabama, and Lawson) and just wanted some input on them. Can you tell that I want to get into a Nursing Program? :D

I have taken A &P 1, MTH100, Bio 103, Psy200, and Eng101. Is there anyone out there who got in without having taken all of their pre-reqs? Anyone from any of these schools would be great!

I'm not in any of those schools so I can't give exact info, but I know of a few other schools that work like mine as far as selection goes. Not sure if you are applying for LPN or RN but here is how they select at my school.

LPN- 170 points possible. Points are given for eng 101 and math 100..an A gets 30 points, B gets 20 points, C gets 10 points. If you took a COMPASS test, your score for the reading portion will be awarded as points(99 possible). Then you can get 11 more possible points from other things which I have found varies by school. (At my school they are 3 points if you have completed 18 hours there, 2 points if you have worked/volunteered in a medical facility for 6 months or more, 6 points if you have completed all prereq's)

RN- 200 points possible. Points are awarded for required biology's. (A&P I, A&P II, Microbiology) A-30 points, B-20 points, C-10 points. COMPASS reading score is added, and then the 11 additional points which are the same as LPN.

There have been people accepted who have not completed all prereqs at my school.

I hope this doesnt sound confusing lol. You could check some of the school websites also, I have found a few that have how their selection process works.

I can only speak for Lawson State's Birmingham campus, but I got into the LPN to RN mobility program without having taken microbiology. I'm taking it now with my nursing classes. So yes, there is a chance that you'll get in without having all your prerequisites, but obviously it's easier if you have them all with an A or B. And honestly, it really is best to get them done before you start nursing classes, because it's one less thing to worry about when you're guaranteed to be stressed out as it is. Have you considered going to LPN school first then doing mobility? LPN programs are definitely easier to get into. Originally, it's not what I wanted to do but now that I'm an LPN, I am so glad I did it this way. Even my limited experience as an LPN(6 months) has made me so much more comfortable in the clinical setting. Before I worked as an LPN, my anxiety before clinicals was through the roof, but now it's just another day. Just something to consider... Good Luck!!

I know Gadsden State has went to a point system. The points come from the prerequisites, so I think it would be hard to get in with out all of them. You can call and talk the advisor and see what they say.

I'm in Central Alabama's RN program and I got in without having all of my prerequisites completed. I still have to take Microbiology. As far as the selection process: CACC uses a points system similar to what others have already discussed. It will definitely help you to have as many prerequisites done as possible though. I am not sure where you live, or if you are willing to relocate/live on-campus, but the University of West Alabama in Livingston has an ADN Program that is fairly easy to get into. They base admission on your ACT scores; a 21 or better gurantees you get in and a 19-20 is a pretty good bet on getting in. You can start the program with only your A&PII and Micro left. It is also a wonderful program. The instructors REALLY care, and you are virtually guaranteed to pass the NCLEX on the first try.

Thanks for all of your help!

also does anyone know anyting about Shelton's nursing program? I work as a PCT at UAB and wondered if this would help me at all with getting into a program?

You people are too kind. Thanks for your replies.

I attend Shelton State. My previous post in this thread is how they do their selection. Good luck. I spoke with a directore last Thursday and she told me on average they have 300 applicants for 50 spots.

Where ever you choose to go, Good Luck!!!
