Entrance exam at Jeff State

U.S.A. Alabama

Published

Hey Everyone!

I was in my biology class last night and my teacher confirmed that Jeff State will be going back to the entrance exam to determine acceptance into the nursing program. I wasn't sure how many people knew yet. It will begin for 2010. It has also been said that they will not accept biology scores that have not been completed within the last 5 years. Any thoughts?

What entrance exam are you talking about?

When I got in I took the compass test, but it wasn't a requirement. I took it because it was better than my ACT score.

Right now Jeff State only uses a point system Starting next year they will using your grades along with making you take an entrance exam, (i am not sure which one but I think it will be the Pax-RN) but it has three sections including math, verbal ability, and i think a writing portion. You must make a certain score on it to even be considered for acceptance into the program. Hope that helped. Personally, I kinda think it stinks because ive worked hard to get my grades up so that I would be accepted. I would hate for it to come down to a few missed points on an entrance exam.

It sounds alot like the compass test, which was very easy. The compass test wasn't a requirement when I entered but I had to take it.

I doubt it will be hard for you.

Hey.

What program are you in? and when did you start?

I was wondering if you might could give me a little info about the actual program? Like clinicals, what you wear, stuff like that. Ive read all kinds of threads about people getting into jeff state but none about what it is like once your in. Thanks

will this be an Alabama thing or just a jeff state thing... This really frustrates me because I'm working so hard to improve my points including retaking a&p 2 this summer and taking micro for the first time and hoping to get As in both to get in. And now more to worry about!?!? LOL will it start spring 2010?

I'm in the Jeff State program. I started in Fall August 2007.

The actual program is pretty good overall. The first 2 semesters are the hardest but after that it's really easy.

You have to wear an ugly white uniform to clinicals but clinicals really arent too bad. Just be sure to know about your pt.

Good luck

I know for a fact that the entrance will be back for spring 2010 at Jeff State. As far as the whole state of Alabama, im not sure but i have heard some rumors of it. Im in the same boat as you, ive been trying to get an A this semester in a&p2 but it aint gonna happen. So i have to make an A in micro too. Looks like the entrance exam is gonna be the icing on the cake!

The COMPASS test is only a placement test - many colleges reguire you to have a minimum reading score on the COMPASS test in addition to an entrance placement test.....placement tests like the TEASE or the NET...many, many years ago Jeff State required prospective nursing students to take (and pass) the PAX-RN test to get into their program.

I spoke to Bonnie Glass about this last week and either your Bio prof is wrong, (Not hard if it's Dr. B.) or Mrs Glass lied right to my face. The school and the teachers are considering it, but no hard plans yet according to Glass. The State of Alabama determines the entrance requirements for ALL C.C. nursing programs. This is the reason that EVERY C.C. ion the state uses the dumb point system.

The point system isn't fair because half of your points come from your ability to read, and you can keep taking your math and Bio classes OVER, and OVER, and OVER until you get the points you need, while you have clearly demonstrated that you are not the kind of student who will make it. It's pathetic, and you're just taking someones spot. I'm not down on someone taking A class over. But if you are taking 2, 3, 4, 5, classes over to get the points, please do all of us a favor and go flip burgers.

I can't wait for the PAX exams to come in (if they ever do). This will make a better caliber of RN student, and better school.

I think the Pax would be a better idea as well. My personal situation lends to that idea. I am an 2nd career student. I have a Biology degree from UAB and was basically a B student my whole college career...and that was working full-time and completing a rigorous degree. I graduated with 3.4 GPA. Great in my opinion. I have worked in science/medical field for years. I had ALL of the pre-requesite classes as well as all of the non-nursing program requirements. I was NOT accepted to the RN program because I had 2 A's and the rest B's. I have had to re-take (money for Jeff Stat) a class to pull a B up to an A to get into the program. In my opinion I, without one more A on my transcript, am a HIGHLY qualified nursing program candidate. I am not only an inteligent student of the life science, but I have a outstanding resume that proves my capabilities and qualifications. As well a laundrey list of recomendations. None of which Jeff State cares about. I feel the point system is an unfair assesment of who is a qualified RN program candidate.

JUST my two cents!!

one more gripe...I ALSO had to wait a whole year to re-apply because I was poorly advised and the night/weekend program only accepts once per year.
