Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty (for non-RNs) MSN 2013

Nursing Students NP Students

Hi All,

There doesn't seem to be a thread yet for pre-specialty applicants (the thread going now seems to consist mostly of grad entry), so I thought I'd start one! Any other pre-specialty folks out there? I am from Seattle and applied for the PMHNP track.

Looking forward to seeing who turns up!

Sarah

Hi Ash!

I’m torn! I have a good friend in Nashville, and I also got the impression from the interview that it would not be a waste to attend J …but, it is a pricey plane ticket, and my boyfriend could not come, so we would have to make another trip later on to find housing… I should probably just bite the bullet and do it =) It’s just stressful while my financial future is up in the air! Where are you coming from? My boyfriend is a musician too, if we get in maybe they can hang out while we study!

;)

Sarah, I did get the feeling from the interview that the trip down might not be a waste of time. The interviewer suggested it would be a good idea as well. Also, my fiance and I are interested in going to Nashville at some point in the future one way or another (he's a musician), so I figure the trip will be worth it. Also, glad to see your interview went well!! Did it help you decide whether the trip might be worth your while??

Hey Sarah!

I totally know how you feel. We're both stressing about finances and would also be taking another trip down to find housing later if Vanderbilt is where I end up. I'm coming from Boston, so tickets are a little pricey as well. But I think it'll be worth it to know how I feel about the city and the school if by some stroke of luck I end up getting in to one of the Boston schools I applied to as well and have to make a decision. So where are you and your boyfriend coming from??

@ hi616

My interview is the the 12th as well!

Totally feel you on that, Ash =) I'd love to have choices, but it will make the decision much more complicated! We are from Seattle. I'm from the Midwest originally, but boyfriend has been here forever, so he is freaking out a wee bit about relocating, afraid he will wind up alone for 2 years with me, my books, and my propensity to over-share ;) Poor guy!

Got the financial aid packet today!

yay financial aid! it's going to be a long wait till 7pm when I can check my mailbox... >.

Aww haha, he sounds like a keeper for coming along for the ride though! My boyfriend and I have both been from here forever... it'll be a big leap for both of us but a welcomed one. If it happens, we'll have to get them together for a man date!

I'm hoping to see that financial aid packet soon! Glad to hear it's on the way!!

Hello, did anyone take any of the prerequisite courses online? Vanderbilt's School of Nursing's website specifically states that prerequisites can be taken at any university, community college, or online. I hope this applies to science courses as well. Did anyone get accepted with online science courses?

I've taken several online classes and some of them include pre-reqs. I'd be careful though with the hard sciences. Anatomy and physiology as well as micro probably shouldn't be taken online because of the lab component unless there is a way to have the lecture online and the lab in person. That's just my thoughts though, best to ask the admissions office.

I took my hard science courses "online" - the lectures and quizzes were online - but the labs were in person on the weekends. Worked out well for me! Many schools I looked at required at least 12 in-person lab hours per course to be accepted as a prereq. I am not sure if that is a stipulation for Vanderbilt or not, but I definitely wouldn't risk it taking a course with online lab. Good luck!

I called Vanderbilt about this today. I took A & P I online (with online lab), and I asked them how they view it. I offered to retake the course, but they said it's not necessary. They said they look at the whole picture. They also said that it would NOT make me less competitive than applicants who took the course in person. I guess it just depends on the school. Some schools really look down on online courses while other schools don't care as long as it's from a regionally accredited institution.

So glad I found this thread super late - I usually hang out only in the Students APN forum! I had my interview today for the NMW track; best of luck to everyone over the next two days! Last year they heard about this specialty on February 20th, so I hope we hear sooner rather than later so I don't have to bother applying to UIC!
