What is the answer to this crazy question?

Took a test for employment the other day. Does anybody know the correct answer to this crazy question? Of course one would use universal precautions with all but they way the question is worded you can only pick one. Would love to know correct answer.

You have the following 4 patients, which pt. are you required by law to wear gloves. You can only pick one answer:

A. Hep. B pt. bleeding from the nose.

B. MRSA pt. with diahrea

C. Applying prescribed eye drops OU

D. Pt. w/emesis and Hep C.

May I ask what state you work in? I have never heard of any law anywhere requiring the wearing of gloves. I always thought it was a matter of infection control principles and institution policy and procedure.

I am making a WILD guess that the answer is "C", because, in that instance, you are protecting the patient from potential infection. In all the other examples, you are protecting yourself.

I agree with you. I answered "C" with the same logic.

My guess would be 'A'. Do you know what the right answer was?

C was my choice too, but in reality I would wear gloves with the other three too. That would be an IF requirement.

I'm thinking the same as you are.

Sorry do not know correct answer.

What an idiotic question

Not yours Peaceful, the one on the test. I would wear them with ALL so they are nuts to ask that.

MIght the answer be B because of the growing number of MRSA outside the hospital?? Wild guess here.

If you find out the correct answer, please let us know!

I also say A..but it could also be B because they wouldn't want MRSA to be spread to the other patients you are caring for....

Agreed! What a stupid, unfair question. (not the OP, the test!)

I think OSHA is the agency that has rules (not laws) on wearing gloves. Not every state requires OSHA be followed. OK, I may be wrong on that but I know breaking OSHA regs in FL would incur heavy personal and hospital fines. In Texas I never hear about OSHA except for things like "OSHA recommends. . . .". My husband who's always lived here says Texas does not require OSHA be followed. Remember; OSHA is often to protect employees, JCAHO & CDC are often to protect patients, so sometimes the regs don't seem to jive.

Having said all that; if you stated the question correctly it was a very stupid question; unless it was some sort of law school quiz asking about semantics of law.

it just seems like a tricky question. "c" is the only answer that states you are performing an intervention. the others are just random descriptions of patients. the required by law part is

cheers,

jay
