I guess this is a would you reather question, if you were stuck in a position of living with someone so negative telling you that you have no chance of becoming a nurse, give up.
would you stay at home where there is free food and bored but negativity telling you, you will never make it and you will be lucky enough to work at mcdonalds or would you move out, work a job while going to school and support your self finacialy while being in a positive enviorment with no one waiting and hoping you fail?

Hmm Well I'm a hispanic male(I've noticed that hispanic families arent supportive lol). Most of my family isn't supportive at all lol. They say things like "soo......you'll be a..male...'nurse'?" or "You'll just be around gay guys that go for nursing" or sometimes "You had terrible grades in HS, how the hell will you ever do something like that?" I did mess up a lot while in HS, but I learned from my mistakes. Don't let people get to you. You live life and you die. Live it how you'd like. If nursing is what you want to do, then go for it. I'm going for it. I could care less what everyone else thinks. I'm not doing this for them. I'm doing it for myself. If they think I'm going to fail then...Not much I can do about it except do it and prove them wrong. Just keep your head up, and prove them wrong if nursing is what you want to do. I completed my first step of proving my family wrong lol Got accepted to nursing school last week! 3.50 GPA WOO! Just do you!

What a horrible choice for a young person to be stuck with! I'd say it depends on how badly the negativity affects you. If you can ignore the person and take advantage of the free digs I'd go for it. If it is crippling your self-esteem and motivation then leaving and having to work as many of us did would be a better choice. Any chance of getting a job as an overnight sitter for an elderly person in charge of room and board etc? May need to think outside the box. My heart goes out to you and I wish you well.

WOW! I say follow your dreams. Life is too short to be unhappy. I'm so glad my husband is supportive of my desire to return to college (dirty house and all!) Good luck to you!

Have you tried posting your issues on a counselling website? (non-nursing)

Nobody deserves to be in a negative environment even if it's free. I would go for it and prove them wrong. Good luck :)

Follow your dream, You can be and do all you set yourself to do. Hard work always pays off! If you want it bad enough and from your post it sounds as if you do, then You will get it. A little, ok a lot of hard work and you will accomplish much.

OP, there is no need for you to do more than you need to with this person. Spend as much time as possible being away. Study in your room, or away. If you find you can, take a part time job. This will give you more time away and it might even be time you look forward to as a break from school and these people. When someone talks to you or at you there is no need to acknowledge they exist if you don't choose for them to exist in your world.

Not sure if this is a partner or a parent doing this to you. Whomever is doing it is being abusive.
FWIW, I didn't even tell my mother I had been to nursing school until after I graduated. When I did tell her she said "you'll never make a nurse" and I told her the accomplishment had already been made.
I'd suggest trying to talk to a counsellor also as each individual situation is so different.
The very best of luck to you.

My first thought was "Duh! Time to move on!" And I mean this with all due respect--I didn't have a lot of support either. Sure, my parents wanted me to go to college but when I chose nursing over engineering and teaching the support sorta dried up. My dad said "You'll never be anything, you'll never have anything. You're an idiot!" So I took myself back to college, worked 2 jobs, got into nursing school and graduated #2 in my class. I have been employed as a nurse for nearly 34 years. Success is the best revenge.
Are your folks not supportive because you want to be a nurse, or are then generally unsupportive of everything? Not that it would make any difference. I just couldn't remain in such a negative environment. What I learned in my own situation is that I can sacrifice, put up with, and do just about any kind of work to support myself when I have to. Get with your college financial aid people and find out what they can do for you.

NO NO NO!!!dont let anyone ever crush your dreams!!!!its your life live it how you want to. The same thing happened to me(im of hispanic background also). I told my mother I wanted to go to school to better myself; she told me I was too old to go to school that i should just forget about it and get married btw i was 21-22 at the time. I cried and cried because i felt alone and i didnt have my families support, but i ignored them and went to lvn school. I later graduated and started working and my rents saw the money i was making. So my mother was impressed and i told her, "and your the one that didnt want me to go to school." She actually apologized to me and told me, "im sorry i didnt know." so my point is follow your dreams they'll come around sooner or later.Best wishes to you.=D
Oh and I am so happy i followed my dreams and never let anyone stop me. My graduation was one of the happiest days of my life. It showed me how strong i really am, and that i can do anything I put my mind to with their support or without it.
