Is Ameritech College a good program?
Hello! I am currently attending Ameritech College in Draper, UT (semester 2.) Although I've heard mixed reviews about Ameritech (and all private schools for that matter), I found that it was the best option for me at the time. I will be greatly in dept afterwords and am just wondering if I will still be able to get a job easily once I graduate, and what the opinion of the school is in the Nursing community. If there are any other students or grads that could give me some feedback that would be great. Thanks!

New Grad feeling like a failure...
Hello. I am a new graduate with my MSN (I completed my RN-MSN together out of state). I have six months of experience as an RN. But I am struggling...I have filled out over 150 applications, with only two interviews. Am I ever going to be hired? How long do I hold out for? When does Nebraska come into play? Any advice would be amazing! Thank you. Nikki

Does the perfect program exist for me?!?!
What do you know about the nursing programs available in Utah? Which have good NCLEX passing rates, reasonable tuition or scholarships available, accredidation, no waiting list, on-site daycare or night classes and unicorns that poop gumdrops (said with sarcasm)? A perfect fit seems impossible to find for this almost 40 mom of toddlers! Time is not on my side so SLCC's long waiting list might not be the way to go for me, however, my pre-reqs are officially done and I can apply in a couple of weeks. The current wait is 2 1/2 years! I have a 3.66 overall GPA and likely a 3.8 or better pre-req GPA, though I haven't actually calculated it (got As w/ one A-). Any advice?

U of U new grad intern program or VA
Hey everyone. I will graduate with my BSN in May and will be moving to Utah right away. I am planning on applying to the ICU new grad intern program at the Univ of Utah, but am wondering if anyone has any experience with the program? Do they mostly just accept their own nursing school graduates or are they open to taking students from other schools? I am doing my senior preceptorship in an ICU and would love to get the intense training in the intern program. My other question is about the SLC VA hospital. There are no nursing jobs open on their website- does anyone have any info about working there or getting hired there? I have worked as student nurse tech at the VA in Oklahoma for the past year and would really like to get on with the one in SLC if I don't get accepted into the program at the U. Thanks for any and all advice!

Utah RN pay, Salt Lake City area
Why are the RN salaries lower than other similar sized Western cities? Denver pays more why? Please do not say cost of living, because Intermountain does not take cost of living into consideration when considering salary. Just curious of nurse in Utah ever questioned their salaries here. Thanks for any input.

What do you know about Dixie State's RN program?
I'm considering applying to Dixie State's nursing program. Does anyone have any advice they can share regarding admissions, competition, tuition, NCLEX passing rates, or other information that would be helpful? I will be applying to SLCC's program at the end of the month, but am looking in to other programs that I may be able to get into more quickly. Brief education background: I have an associates degree from SLCC and all prerequisites will be complete by mid-December. My overall GPA is roughly 3.4, however, my prequisite GPA is likely a 3.8 or higher. Any pointers to help this confused momma is appreciated. By the way, I should mention I have 3 year old twin boys. Will that be simply too much to handle? How many days per week is nursing school typically?

Broadview University
Hello, Quick question - Does anyone know about Broadview's night school RN program? I'm particularly interested in the schedule as I have a day job that I can't change. Secondly, their program is accredited by NNLAC but the school is accreditited by one of the bodies that many private, for-profit schools are. My ultimate goal is to be a FNP. Will I have any challenges with credits transferring even after I completed the program? Thanks in advance!

SLCC changes admission standards, eliminates wait list, Aug 2011,
http://www.slcc.edu/pdf/hs/HSAnnouncement-08-05-2011.pdf NO MORE WAIT LIST New applicants will be selected in a competitive process with probable changes to the current admission criteria. In August, SLCC suspended applications to the nursing program and will announce new admission standards November 1, 2011. If you printed out the requirements previously and have been diligently plowing through the pre-reqs, this may be news to you. Personally, I think the way SLCC has handled this is really unfair to students getting close to finishing the prereqs and applying. For those of us just starting out, we have much more time to adapt. On August 29th, advisors held two information sessions and I was able to attend part of the evening session. I'm interested in hearing from other Utah students who are in the process of completing SLCC's prereqs or already on the current wait list, or in the program. With the elimination of the wait list, there also may be UVU and WSU students out there who now see SLCC's program as a viable option. My understanding is the Fall 2012 cohort may have a "few" slots available to compete for once people on the current waiting list submit their intentions. The information sessions were for all the health science programs, not nursing specifically. However plenty of people asked questions specific to the individual programs. If you asked a question and got an answer that actually provided any information, post it here.:) The answer to many questions was simply wait until Nov. 1st for the new admission standards to be posted. It would be great if something "leaked" here from people in on the process! Admissions test: The nursing department indicated that they are strongly leaning toward a nursing entrance examination, but were absolutely mum on which one they might pick. UVU (ADN w/BSN option) and Roseman (BSN program) require TEAS V; sure would be nice if SLCC picked this one also. But I am under the impression they use HESI testing in the program so I wouldn't be surprised if they picked the HESI pre-admission exam. If someone in the program can clarify if they use HESI testing, that would be helpful. Additional classes or elimination: You should not expect any changes (additions to or subtractions from) the courses that are required as prerequisites to our program. However, it would be within reason to expect that under the new criteria, in addition to the prerequisites, students may be required to also have ENGL 1010, HLTH 1020, PSY 1100 or FHS 1500 and CNA Certification (the required Support Courses for nursing) completed prior to applying for the nursing program.Any other criteria that may become part of the admissions requirements are still some distance from being decided or approved. CNA certification: It was strongly suggested that not only CNA certification, but actual CNA work experience (and not other healthcare experience), would now be required. GPA requirements: When questioned about the use of overall GPA vs prereq GPA, the woman representing the nursing department said she did NOT anticipate that they would be "elitist" and use overall college GPA in the selection process. Univ of Utah (BSN program) does. She thought only GPA in the prerequisite courses would count, but did not address retakes. November 1st seems so far away! If you have any information, thoughts, ideas, share it here!

Roseman Univ at South Jordan, UT campus...
i'm curious to hear from roseman university of health sciences (formerly university of southern nevada) grads or students from the 18 month bsn at south jordan utah campus? according to http://www.roseman.edu/node/98 the inaugural class for the sj campus was january 2010, so the first graduates would have been july 2011. regarding the program itself: what was your experience with the program? did you find the quality of the program combined with the shortened length of time spent in school to be worth the cost? what was your experience with clinical and the block system, especially the requirement to pass every block with a ninety percent? did classmates struggle and drop out? for grads, what was your nclex and job hunting experience? did employers recognize roseman, and did hiring managers seem interested in you? did you get hired; where and how quickly? thanks to any students or grads who can respond in detail!

Salt Lake Community College Spring 2013
Spring 2013 is the first cohort for applicants accepted under SLCC's new competitive entry process! Did you get accepted (or not)? What was your GPA? Hesi A2 scores? Did you have points in other areas (additional classes completed, CNA experience, etc)? Share your experience in the application process here. Because the change to the competitive entry process is so new, there's no historical data for other pre-nursing students to figure out how likely they are to be admitted. Share a little, learn a little, maybe meet some of your upcoming cohort!

Program Discription for LPN programs
I am currently in the process of applying for Nursing programs. I am not in any hurry to finish a program because I will need to be working while in school (to maintain healthcare benefits). I am ready to apply with all my prereq's completed. I may want to do SLCC's RN program, but I am interested in looking into other options such as Ogden Weber Applied Tech LPN program or Davis Applied Tech LPN program, then completed my RN afterwards. Can anyone who has been through either of these LPN programs give me an insight to what the program is like? I have heard from someone that one of these LPN program's is mostly online (except for clinical's). Is this true? Thanks!

Salt Lake RN Job Market
Hello, I will be graduating in December with an ADN-RN and I am considering re-locating to the Salt Lake area from the D/FW area. From what I've read the job market looks tough there. Is is a longshot for me to get hired, being an out-of-state new grad with no prior work history in healthcare? BTW, I plan to apply for a BSN bridge program there locally and getting ACLS certified. Thanks!

Utah S.B 263 Please Read
In the course of my work as a nurse educator I became aware of the Utah SB 263 which has already passed the Utah State Senate and is now before the House. I believe the bill is misguided to say the least and would like help in making Utah State Representatives understand why this bill should not pass the House and become law in Utah. I have included a summary of the issues for your information. Senate Bill 263 passed out of the Utah State Senate and is now before the House. S.B. 263 creates an exemption from DOPL and State Board of Nursing oversight for nursing education programs that are accredited by a list of national accrediting bodies. As a nursing educator, I believe it is the wrong policy for many reasons: 1. It does not solve any existing problem in Utah. It addresses a hypothetical issue, and I feel it is good policy to confine our legislative efforts to addressing real issues faced by the citizens of Utah. 2. The bill seeks to change accreditation requirements for schools offering approved nursing education programs. If an education program is accredited by an approved accrediting entity, that program will not be required to be subject to Utah State Board of Nursing oversight. 3. Utah is currently monitoring schools that could be excluded from DOPL oversight, including programs that are not meeting the current standards. Programs that are not meeting standards need more, not less, oversight. The public will not benefit in any way from lack of oversight from the State Board of Nursing. 4. Nationally, nursing accreditation and approval of nursing programs operate under the same model Utah uses with both accreditation requirements and state board program approval. This change would place Utah under a different nursing program monitoring system that all other states. The public will not benefit from this change. In summary, SB 263, as it is being presented to the house, is very likely to create a gap in oversight of nursing education programs, which does nothing to protect the health of patients or instill confidence in the public regarding the nursing care they will receive when it is required. Please take a stand!

Current job market in Northern Utah? Looking to relocate from MD!
Hello Utah RNs! My husband and I are thinking about relocating to the SLC area from Maryland. I was wondering how the job market is for nurses there, as well as the average salary. I don't really know anyone out there so I would really appreciate your input. I saw some older posts on this topics but no one has really commented on them recently, so I thought I would put another request out there. :-) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
