I'm trying to figure something out here. I'll be graduating in December and starting out as a new grad next January. How hard is it in general to request a certain day off each week? Is this basically impossible? I'm asking because I'm thinking of taking a paid church choir job that would add $200/month to my income (which would basically cover my student loan payment...hopefully), but that would mean that I could never work Sunday days.
In your experience, is this feasible? Or is it just a pipe dream to think that my manager would be able to grant me each Sunday off. Have other people been able to do something like this? I could always work Sunday night if need be. Thanks.

Probably wouldn't be unheard of if you then worked every Saturday...If you work in a hospital setting they would most likely require 2 weekends per month - you could fulfill that by working 4 shifts, or every Saturday.

Anyway, depending on where you work and what kind of unit, it may be possible, but if it's in a hospital on a floor or unit, it's pretty unlikely!!!
Would it be possible for you to still work your weekends, but perhaps after church, like 3-11??

It is possible. Many places have "weekenders"that only work Sat and Sundays. Just make sure and talk about it during your interview. You do have some leverage - hospitals need nurses and a lot of times, they'll bend over backwards to get you signed on.

Yes it is possible. I work perdiem and make my own schedule.

It depends on the facility and how hard up they are for nurses. Some places are flexible. Some aren't. Good luck :)

I think you'd make a lot of enemies among your co-workers if you went into a hospital setting expecting to get every Sunday off. Perhaps you could work 3-11 or even a night shift on Sundays. No one wants to work Sunday nights in most hospitals.
That's what I was thinking Ruby. I could offer to work the Sunday night shift to make up for it. I may call the manager where I'm currently working as a student nurse/tech (and where I want to work after graduation) and discuss the possibility with her. I don't mind working every other weekend, as I'll likely have to do, and if as you say most people don't like working Sunday night, then I'll do it. I don't have kids and Sundays are no different from any other day for me.

With Chronic dialysis, you would not work Sundays.

Much easier to get the same day during the week (e.g., Wednesday). Even more so if you're part-time.
But every Sunday will be difficult either way.

Where I work you could do that, but you would have to bargain for it and mostl likey work every Saturday...we have had some people do that.
