5 8s or 4 10s???

Right now I work Mon-Friday 7-330 . I came from 3 12s so 5 days a week leave me drained. I have the option of 4 10s ..... 7-530pm. I would get home by 6pm instead if 4pm. My husband currently works from home but may be moving back to a 9-5.We have to pick out son up from day care by 6pm. Just don't know what to do.

What schedule would you like if you were in my shoes?

I would love four 10s. I work five 8s that are usually 9s or more, lol. When I went from my 12s to the "five whole days in a row?!" position, I didn't think I would like it at first, but I am used to it now. How long have you been doing the M-F thing?

I've been doing it for 4 months and still haven't adjusted. I feel like I have no time for myself. I love the no weekends , no nights or holidays. Just the 5 days a week is tiring.

I've always liked being home for my younger kids afterschool with minimal use of daycare.

I love working 4 10s. The day's not too long, plus I get a whole "extra" day off. Working 5 days a week would be a deal breaker for me.

Would doing the 4 10's save you the cost of a day of daycare? Might be worth it if it will.

Nope daycare costs would stay the same. I think I'm gonna go ahead and out in the request. I just need a day during the week ! If approved my hours would be 7-530pm

Now I am fantasizing about four 10s, lol. I have been in my position for almost a year and I think I am used to it now, but I do miss having weekdays off! I hope they approve your request.

Thank you. I hope they do too! I'll keep you all posted !

10 hours may make it difficult to arrive to pick up your son from daycare before 6pm, if your husband returns to 9-5, can he reliably pick up your son before 6? or does his work run late sometimes?

Not that this matters, but is your job inpatient?

I rarely see 10s offered. My bf and I talk about this alot and if I didn't work acute care, I would love a M-Thursday gig, four tens, and have every Friday off.

I have the option of (5) 8's or (4) 10's and have worked 10's for the past 6 years and has served me well. I have the luxury of picking my days and has served me well. I work Mon-Thurs and rather a 3 day weekend every week. Personally I rather have more days off at the trade off of longer hours.

I have a love/hate relationship with 4 10s. In theory it's great. When staffing is good it's great. Having a day off during the week is great (as long as I'm not scheduled on call going into it and getting called in - if that happens I spend part of my free day sleeping!). When staffing isn't great and there isn't enough relief and on call staff at 1730 it's not so great. It's always so fun when you're scheduled 10s but work at least one 12 because there isn't relief when you should be getting off work. I like 10s better than 12s, but I also see some appeal to 8s too. On the other hand, this might be an OR specific problem because in lots of other environments everyone can just take an extra patient for a few hours.
