RN Recognition & Respect

I am posting on behalf of my humble spouse (a multiple and nationally awarded RN) in an effort to facilitate comparable benefits bestowed to other respected professions that serve the general public in critical and appreciated capacities. There are several industries that offer exclusive discounts and benefits to recognized professions (such as first responders, military personnel and teachers) for the services provided in those chosen professions. Although those recognized professions have my respect, I often wonder how and why nurses have been omitted from such inclusive recognition. Can anyone help me to understand the disparity? Or better yet, please help to get nurses added to the other recognized professions.

Have you seen the crap pay paramedics get?

Nurses get paid more. The other professions don’t get compensated nearly as much as they deserve. Also, many hospitals or employers do offer a discount program. You might have to search through HR or employee benefits website to find them.

Teachers max out early on their payscale as well.

No doubt! People ask we I stopped being a medic and got my RN. My reply as follows:

I got tired of carrying my share of 300lbs of screaming humanity backwards down a flight of stairs at 0300AM for $12.00 an hour.

I have mixed feelings about this. Real professionals with respect don't get special recognition, nor do they need to seek affirmation of their worth. This covers most jobs. I agree with the others about the money. We earn a lot more than others and don't warrant discounts.

In UK a lot of places will give discount to NHS employees (not just nurses) on production of an NHS ID badge.

I got a free Cinnabon last year during nursing week. This year, I got a coupon for a free sandwich from Chick Fillet. I've gotten little free stuff like that frequently throughout my career.

As far a big rewards go, I don't feel the general public owes us anything. We agree to do a certain job for a certain amount of compensation. People shouldn't be made to feel guilty if they don't give us more.

True story. My pay pretty much doubled after I went from paramedic to RN and had a year of time as a nurse.

The initial post did not intend to compare professions whereas it meant to INCLUDE another deserving profession.

...Love it!

Well there's been times I got a free coffee at a gas station or a take out restaurant while wearing my scrubs on my way to work.

You said "in an effort to facilitate comparable benefits bestowed to other respected professions," therefore inviting comparison by wanting similar benefits. However, as it has been pointed out, those other professions rarely make the same income as RNs, so why should RNs enjoy the same discounts? Usually it's just a small percentage (like 10%) anyway. I will happily take my free annual Chipotle burrito, though! ?
