Regular hours?

Anyone go from working 3 12 hr shifts to working 9 to 5? If so how do you like it?

I went from working three 12-hour overnight shifts weekly to working from Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm in a role away from the bedside.

However, I accepted this position only because it enables me to work from home and the schedule is flexible. There's no way I'd agree to spend five shifts per week at the bedside devoting my face time to patients and their families.

I will be doing discharges and admissions. I've done this some but just prn, it's alot less stressfull than floor nursing. I'm just concerned about working 5 days a week although my days will be shorter.

I am wondering the same thing....I have done nights for almost ten years now, and not sure if I would enjoy a regular schedule. I like having some days off during the week when husband and kiddos are at work/school, to get the errands done, and get a small window of time to myself, those days I enjoy eating lunch all by myself while I read articles, or reading a few chapters of a book when I have downtime.

I'm at the point now that I want a change, but scared! This would be a good opportunity for me to stay with the same hospital plus I already know what to do cause I've been doing it some prn. I've been told that I will feel better when I get off work cause its 8 hrs versus 12 plus less stress. I just don't know what to do!

This sounds like a good job opportunity, even if it is 5 days a week.

Sometimes 9-5 does not always mean 9-5 exactly. It can mean leaving at a minimum of 5pm, but only if the work is all done.

Now, I would never go back to 5 days a week of inpatient, bedside nursing. For procedural nursing, or something like what you are looking at, that would be worth a look.

I have. Thought I loved my three 12s and was pretty leery of going 9-5. Turned out to be one of the best moves I have made for my physical, mental and marital health.

Do you feel like you are always at work? Do you have more energy when you get home to do things?

I often wonder if bank tellers, mechanics, office persoek discuss this. Much of the world till does five shifts a week

Haha, I know right!

I worked 5 days a week in a busy clinic. After a year of that, I went running back to the hospital to 12 hour shifts. I always felt like I was at work, and never had downtime to get errands or anything else done. My husband didn't like either because we barely saw each other. YMMV.

I did 12s for a few months while I was a student and then got hired into a 9-5 M-F community position. I like the 9-5 better, personally. I have time to do things in the evenings and I know for sure that I will always have evenings free so I can do things like take a class or join a choir (both of which I have!). I'm not nearly as tired at the end of the day, obviously, either.
