Controversial Michael Moore Flick 'Sicko' Will Compare U.S. Health Care with Cuba's
Very informative movie. I just watched the movie "SiCKO" and its very eye opening. It shows how our country is so far behind all countries in the healthcare arena that it makes us all look dumb in a sense. Put a shame to us all because we all can be honest with ourself and im sure have seen first hand what happens when u dont have health insurance or a hospital has to boot our a patient because they are there too long. I think we can adapt a new healthcare system like that of the french, canadian, or even cubans. Again, we all pay taxes, why not include it in our taxes like them and allow all americans healthcare. The doctor in france can make 200k a yr, own a 1million dollar house, and live comfortably, so why wouldn't everyone be in agreement. I think thats the reason we all went into healthcare, not for money, but to help people. We are already socialist like they said when it pertains to the postal service, library, and other services. Why wouldn't healthcare be any different. We could all live longer and do more good. Oh also, after watching, im thinking, if i dont have insurance, its probably cheaper to pay the airplane ticket to cuba where they only ask for your name and birthdate than to pay what they charge here in america for anything in healthcare. Might be a huge surge in airline ticket sales. end of rant. good movie though. seen better, but good documentary.

Anyone Bipolar???
i was told i was bipolar. started on prozac. Stopped that after it didn't work real well and lost weight. Since then, never used anything and never really needed to say i was bipolar. I think i have it mostly under control. I dont have manic episodes, but i do get depressed/happy days a bit. I get insomnia and fatigue though. Could be the stress im under too.

What nursing shortage?
that might have changed. i dont know many who went into ER. I know a few in ICU and many went into OR. Though the situation in philly is different because as you know, around here, there are 20-30 nursing school in just the philly suburbs (4 counties). Many of them great, like U of P, Drexel, Temple, Villanova. So many schools at 50-100 students each, we are talking floods of applications and many people. Its a bit harder to get an interview at some of the top hospitals in the area like CHOP or HUP. However many of of those hospitals i heard do hire in the range of 200 people a yr. If you go to the surrounding counties like u said, its difficult too as many hire from within first, limited spots, and few openings. Where im at, u have to have worked there during school. No outside applicants. Guess thats why everyone there has been there forever. Pay is actually better if u work in the suburbs, no city wage tax of like 6%, no travel headache of a gazillion people trying to drive into the city on a 2 lane highway, and less acuity. All the counties are within 40 minutes of the city and there are some very nice areas as well at affordable prices. 2 hour drive to d.c. or nyc. Trains in all 4 counties. Definitely recommend the area for anyone. Also if u work in the city, live in the suburbs work in the city, if thats where u wanna work. Commutes worth the schooling for your kids.

Name on stethoscope...
I searched, dont worry. saw many of the huge threads like this one... https://allnurses.com/forums/f8/title-bsn-badge-149821-10.html and many others about names and titles.. Im a recent grad, BSN and have not taken the boards cuz u gotta wait till paperworks all in. I want to know cuz i want to get my name engraved on my stethoscope lol. What did most people put on there stethoscopes or did they just leave it blank and not put there name. Should i just get that little name plate u connect to it and wait or get it engraved. I know, nothing monumental, but its my graduation present. Dont want anyone taking my new stethoscope. Joe Smoe GN, BSN Joe Smoe GN Joe Smoe RN, BSN Joe Smoe RN Joe Smoe BSN Joe Smoe BSN, RN Joe Smoe confused yes the things we baffle about, names on a stethoscope lol.

Nursing Research Paper
nice paper. good read. i think in doing the apa format, i dont believe you need to put the page number in the parenthesis. Just (author. year) not (author, year, page number). Also im guessing its an informal paper considering the many what if, what are, questions. Makes you think, but i remember someone telling me not to ask questions, but rather answer them.

GN starting rate?
Philly Area is 22-25 plus differentials. Believe it or not you get paid better in the suburbs than in the city. Plus u get killed with city tax on top of low pay.

Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia
false, they take new grads.

Drexel, Villanova, U Penn nursing programs..opinions please
if i were you, id go to drexel. Also, consider villanova for graduate education cuz i heard Villanova is number one in graduate education in the US. Dont know the cost of either but im sure its up there rivaling penn.
-
Drexel, Villanova, U Penn nursing programs..opinions please
dont quote me but from the schools ur picking, id pick drexel if u can get in. I heard there pass rate is like 98% and villanova is like only 89-93%. Also drexel is in the city, more exposure to larger and more critical patients i believe. Also ur at some great hospitals as well. I think villanova is alright, but for the price, theres other places that are better bang for ur buck.

clinicals + full-time job = ?
well ill update and say i stopped working one of my jobs that was 3 days a week and now just work 2 days a week, cuz clinicals and class are too overwhelming and leaving no time to study and suffering on my grades. gl tho

Shy guys
like most said, take a speech class. its required at our school that you take public speaking or professional speaking, so that everyone gets over that fear. you have to do like 5-6 speeches during the semeseter infront of the whole class so you'll get over your fear. Also take an antihistamine which reduces your anxiety but also makes you a bit sleepy.

HELP fo PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
oh man, i do that, haha, i go to barnes and noble and sit and use every care plan book they have and it helps haha. ill go there, pick out 3 books and do my care plans. you can also use their other books as well. patho however, you need to study a lot and remember a lot. Learn all the signs and symptoms cuz our teacher would ask, what is Not a sign and symptom of mitral stenosis. She'd nit pick any small fact on any small page. it was all powerpoints and it was a huge book with six slides a page and 6 facts a slide. so you had a lot to remember. gl tho.

Can you answer this question correctly?
dang i was torn between A and C and chose C and then relized it said call unit and thats a no no.

clinicals + full-time job = ?
its very difficult. I've learned the hard way working to much. I am a workaholic, have been since hs. I would work long schedules in hs. Would go to school at 7 till 3, then sports practice after till 5, and then work 5 till 11 every day of the week, m-f. then on the weekend i worked another job. Been working two jobs for the past 2 yrs now. I work a total of 40 hours a week in 3 days. I maximize my weekends working 16 hours each day. Its very tough and at one point i killed myself. Patho + Micro + Nursing + 11-7 5 days a week + 2 8's = formula for disaster. You live and you learn your limits and right then i did. Now I still work 2 jobs but only work weekends and its doable, but during the weekend you dont have much studying time. Thing is i dont HAVE to work, but i WANT to work, cuz im a workaholic and i enjoy not having to worry if i can afford something or i can go and just spend a few hundred now and then brush it off. plus paying tuition on my own, car, etc, im pretty financially secure. I think i might cut down one shift so its only 32 and give myself a break, cuz by sunday nights, im exhausted. GL tho and remember to study as much as you can.

Should I worry that I received a C in Anatomy?
i got A's in anatomy and phys, but got a D and finally a C in patho. so its not everything. C = continue and you'll learn to love it. Its not just grades, but rather your gpa and what other things your doing. If your working 2 jobs, have some healthcare experience, letters of rec. and have 1 or 2 C's, vs a person who has B's and has no work experience and what not, i'd say you have some advantage. You have the experience and you have other commitments that you can do at the same time and balance it. This is what i hate, because if you have to work, they dont lots of times look at what you do such as work in the process of going from hs-college since they only look at extracurricular activities, sports, clubs, while theres very responsible qualified people who have to work and dont have time to mess around with those worthless, sorry to say, activities, sports, and clubs that are getting you no where.

I failed Pathophysiology!
i can attest to you. i failed patho and in my class, the teacher told us straight up, it was a huge class of 80 that only half will pass. and that was true, only half past if more. the information was immense, powerpoints out the wazooo, the test were on nearly 150 pages of powerpoints, 6 powerpoint slides a page, and like 5-8 lines a slide. crazy information and he would ask a specific question on any specific note. It was tough and i missed by 2-3 points. I did take it over the next semester, a smaller class of like 15 or so and it was a newer teacher, she had different powerpoints, same as the other teacher with like 150 pages or so and what not. She gave pop quizzes like the other teacher on any random day, i mean like when the test was the next day she'd give a popquiz and u'd be like, oh fudge! she'll walk in one day and be like, ok papers away, pop quiz and u got like 2 pop quizzes a test, 4 tests, and then u drop ur 2 lowest quizzes and average ur highest ones to count as a test. In the end, i squeeked it out and made it the second time around. Now im in my third yr and doing fine so far, passing and all. Patho is the make it or break it course in our school and lots dont make it, so when udo, feel a huge sigh of relief off ur back and ull be fine.

How do you make flash cards?
ditto. made 1000 just for my last nursing final. Took about a week to do but it was helpful.

Soooo, you're observing in the Operating Room (O.R.)...
i work in the OR and its always cold, but u get use to it very fast. i would add, dont bring anything in ur pockets like ur keys, valuables, wallet, money, etc, always keep that locked up in your locker because u dont want to lose it and u dont want to have any metal or anything on you. Also, dont bring your school bag or what not into the OR area unless you are allowed too. this is a sterile temperature controlled and atmosphere controlled area. I will see doctors bringing soda and food into the area, but not into the room. This doesn't mean you can bring your bottle of water or what not with you tho. If they do let you get dressed in a gown or what not and your in the room and for some reason you are near the sterile environment, you always pass a person back to back because the back of a person is where the germs would be and the front is the sterile area in most cases. for instance, if your sterile and the doctors sterile, you dont walk right by infront of him because your letting your germs brush away onto him or onto his hands. Also always keep your hands up if they let you put gloves on, dont cross them on your chest unless u got a sterile gown on, or dont let them hang down or be below your belt. Im sure you see this on tv all the time where you see them walking around with their hands up like there nuts. same things applys. when you are wearing eye protection, make sure u get a mask that keeps the steam out of your eye protection glasses because many times people put on a regular mask and when they put their glasses on, they steam up from their breath. there are specific masks that prevent this from happening, and they are usually lined with a plastic on the inside to keep the moisture in. oh and if it starts to smell for whatever reason, like bile or just some uncontrollably disgusting smell, it will happen lol, the nurses might have some mint stuff to get rid of the smell. i am not quite sure the name of it, but its a mint bottle that u put on your finger and then swipe on your mask and keeps the smell from intoxicating you. if u cant stand the smell, ask if the nurse has some mint for your mask, they usually will kno what u mean. also when u have perfume and what not, do not spray it all over your scrubs or what not, its nice to smell good, but u dont need to overkill us and especially the patients. many patients are sensitive to things and the last thing we want is your patient breaking out or being anaphylactic because u got some weird perfume or cologne on. you can wear deoderant tho. some cases will ask that u not, but usually it will specify if their an abbi patient. other than that, have fun.
