  1. Hi, did you end up doing ThriveAP? I'm trying to apply to some residency programs, but I'm not sure if ThriveAP is hands-on learning or just online courses. I don't know how this is helpful. If you ended up doing another residency program, did they require you to have NP experience beforehand? The organization where I work as an RN has a transition-to-practice program for the fall cohort for some of their sites. The director told me we would still have to go through the hiring/interview process and I may or may not get hired. She said it would help if I had some NP experience beforehand. Did that apply to you?
  2. Did you like it? I just graduated and am interviewing with them now. Honestly, there are not a lot of jobs out there that accept new grads, so I don't think I have much of a choice, especially if I get the job. However, I feel like I'm being lowballed for the salary with the amount of work we have to do. The recruiter was trying to find out the hourly, but she guessed around $56/hour. We only work a 30/35-hour rotation, which ends up being only around 87K a year for NP work + admin+ support. I would have to pick up shifts to make 100K (which I think is a good salary in MD). However, I wouldn't want to do it immediately as a new grad learning. The sad thing is, I just got a pay raise as an RN and would make 80K full-time. Last year, I was making 70K. I think I will only stay here for 18 months to 2 years to get experience before going elsewhere. Also, I know the recruiter said it's a one-hour lunch, but is the full hour unpaid, or is it 30 paid and 30 unpaid? Any incites/thoughts?
  3. Hello, My school requires we get a copy editor for our DNP paper. Did anyone have a similar experience? Are there any affordable copy editors that you would recommend? I found this website: Editors for Students, managing editor Jim (James) Peterson, but I'm unsure how legit this is. Unfortunately, there are scammers out there, and it is hard to gauge what is real or not. Any recommendations are appreciated.
  4. I'm planning to move to florida eventually. does your degree count into how much salary you can negotiate for? Here in maryland I get $34 and some change for 2 years experience. we all get same rates whether its a asn or BSN. does anyone also know what central florida regional hospital is like? not just salary wise but patient to nurse ratio wise as well. also has the salary changed much since 2019. thanks
  5. Hello, My mom wants to move to Florida so I will be moving with her. I am currently living in MD so I could get a Compact state license before moving. I've been reading past threads about FNP or RN jobs in FL from many years ago. Was wondering if there are any changes to FL nursing for both RN and NP jobs such as working environments and salaries. I am not an NP yet still in school. I'll either move before graduating or after graduating from NP school. If I'm moving before becoming an NP I was thinking about working in a clinic as an RN such as home infusion or vaccine RN instead of the hospital so I could still focus on school. I also heard hospital RNs can take up to 7 or 8 patients which I am not gonna do. My job right now is 1 to 6 ratio and that is already bad enough. Any news, suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I'm thinking more of the Orlando area or cities near Orlando like Sanford. Thanks!
  6. Hello Florida nurses. My mom is planning to move to Florida for the weather since she has arthritis. I'm moving with her to care for her. I read in previous posts that the salary are horrible down there. Is that still the case? How much is it now for hospital nurse versus in an outpatient setting? I'm in NP school right now so besides the pay to help with housing but also tuition so I'm curious what salary would be like. I'm not making much right now compared to others in my state so I'm not hoping for $40/hr or anything like that. I'm making 30 right now as a day shift nurse with some extra pay to be charge and precepting. The nurse to patient ratio here is 5:1 or 6:1. Any information would be appreciated. And where would I go to check on hurricane/flooding effects? She wants to live an area with less hurricane or at least with less impact compared to places like east coast. Thanks for any information coming my way.
  7. Hello to both, My mom is looking into areas to move to in SW Florida so I'll be moving with her. Have you guys ended up in Florida and what is the wage like right now? I'm trying to stay out of hospital and work in a clinic or something since I'm in NP school right now. Are the nurse patient ratios reasonable? I'm currently making $30 with ratio of 5:1 sometimes 6:1. Any news would be helpful. Thanks!
  8. Thank you so much! I didn't think new grads would get much experience to negotiate so good to know so I don't try. I will be happy if I could get a job with good learning opportunities, good working environment/culture. I would think for PG and Howard County it would be reasonable to expect ~85-90K as new grad? Or is that me being naive and underpaid?
  9. Hi guys. did anyone work as FNP in Maryland especially as a new grad. I have a long ways to go before I graduate considering I just started school but I would like to know what I'm getting into to prepare early. I hope to make at least 100k as an FNP. I plan to work around the PG and Howard County area but would be interested in the Baltimore and DC area as well. I have read so many posts of new grads negotiating their salary. How do you go about that when I'm a new grad with no NP experience? I will be graduating with a DNP if that helps any. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
  10. Hi @tachybradyRN How did your FNP job search go? I am currently in FNP school and am having the same issue where the listed salaries are so vague. I am interested mostly in the PG and Howard County Area but would think about Baltimore if there is a bigger difference in pay. Where did you apply and from your experiences what salary ranges did you see being offered? Thanks for your input!
  11. Hi Bree. Did you end up going to Bradley? I'm starting in April and just wanted to see what you think of it so far if you did go. thanks
  12. Hi I'm in the process of renewing my license as well. On the credentials page where it asks you which license you want to renew we just need to choose active and ignore the advanced practice options below that option? My RN license will still be renewed even though it's not listed in those options? Thanks.
  13. I checked on my Maryland BON website and as of now it is accredited. I realize this thread is old so if anyone here did end up attending the DNP FNP program please give me an update. Thanks
  14. I've been accepted and will start in April for Bradley's DNP FNP program. Did you guys end up going to Bradley and if so what's your experience like?
  15. Hi I'm starting Bradley DNP FNP program in April. I do agree that we are adult learners and if we want an FNP we should do what we need to do to get it. Honestly every school has there bad points. I went to University of Maryland as an undergrad and as good as the school reputation is not all of their teachers are great teachers so I'm not too concerned about having to teach ourselves at this point. Just want a DNP in the end. I don't know where you live but I live in Maryland. Do you have any advice or suggestions in regards to getting preceptor? That is my main concern. If anyone else lives in Maryland attending Bradley please respond as well about which sites you have used. I'm hoping since I work for on of the Hopkins hospital I could get preceptor at their community physician offices.
  16. I am actually considering Maryville as one of my top schools to apply. I did not get that experience of harassment phone calls. they have only called me twice each several months apart just to make sure I am interested and answering my questions. they have been very cordial and have not called me since. will only call me when it is near the admissions term that I want to apply to which I'm okay with cause it saves me from having to call them. I like that their classes are all online and no campus requirements as well as having only two classes per semester (one if doing clinicals). that seems more feasible especially when I am planning to work full time. From what I have heard from them even though they don't set up placements for you they do have a team that helps you with that and if your really having trouble finding a mentor they will definitely do something. not like they will leave you to yourself. not sure if I want to go to Maryville 100% yet because I'm hoping to be able to get a BSN DNP program that accepts my GPA and get it done in one go. But that is just my two cents. also honestly a lot of online programs will have a lot of group work. and no matter which work schedule you have if your committed to the program you can definitely make the group thing work. I've talked to people who do their homework during work (depends on acuity of your unit) as well as getting up early (sacrifice some sleep time) to make things work. But that is just my two cents. Good luck in your search and decision!
  17. Thank you for sharing! yes the litigations and possibility of going to court scares me. I decided to do FNP because I couldn't narrow down which population I liked to work with. for getting multiple certifications I assume you get your FNP or whatever specialization you are aiming for first then go back to school to get certified in another specialization? Thank you for your advices. This really helps! How did you decide that you wanted to work in a practice specializing in allergy, asthma and immunology? if I am going to work in a practice that has a "specialty" do I need to have some RN experience in that specialty? thanks
  18. Hi all, I'm interested in becoming an NP and have always planned to be a provider. I was wondering if FNPs can give me a better insight on what they do and the stress level. What do you like and don't like about it? Basically what will I be getting myself into. I want to settle down with a family later and a 9 to 5 job as a provider at an office is best for me but I am open to other options as well. If FNPs can talk about what their day is like and what type of location or setting you are working at (I.e. office, hospital, home health ect.) that would be great. Thank you very much.
  19. Hi I’m interested in Marymount FNP program. It would be great if you could talk a little about the admissions for you so far and if you could post an update on how you like it once you start? I’m not planning to start for another year or so and am looking at schools now. Thank you!
  20. Hello everyone, I’m currently looking into NP programs and am wondering if getting DNP is worth it or should I just do MSN? Is there a difference in salary when you first start out as a new grad NP? I’ve also read that having a specialty helps you negotiate to get higher pay. I’m interested in getting an FNP but am not sure if that is considered a specialty or not? If it’s not can I get a specialty along with my FNP? And tachyBrady, GWU is also where I am thinking about applying as well. Could you let me know how the program went for you? And how was salary like if you applied to anywhere in Howard County? I live in PG County and currently work in Howard County. Any information helps. Thank you!
  21. Hi Shadygirl, Thank you so much for answering all these posts. I actually am interested in Maryville's BSN to DNP program too. I was wondering if you were able to work during the years you have clinicals (at least part time)? Also, I live in Maryland which is nowhere near Maryville. Do you think it would be a problem getting placed at clinical sites close to home? Also how long were you an RN before you applied to this program? I am thinking of applying to this program after I have gotten a little over a year of RN experience and am afraid that I won't be as competitive enough considering my GPA is not that great either. Thank you so much for your advices and input. Also for those who have applied to this program, how are you guys liking it so far and what is the likelihood of me getting in since my GPA is low (2.93 graduated from University of Maryland). Currently working in one of the john hopkins system hospitals and what can I do in the meantime to boost my chance of getting accepted. Thanks everyone and stay safe!
  22. Hi guys, I am actually considering Maryville too for my DNP program. I wanted something that would be cheap and flexible with my work and family schedule. I've had some online classes before so I'm not too bothered by it. I'm more worried about getting placement for practicum and clinical experience since I do not live in that area. I live in Maryland and do not want to end up being placed in a far away place for clinicals. For those who are currently in the program or have graduated from their program could you let me know how the placements work and have you been able to get the majority if not all of your placements close to home? also how often do the prices go up per semester? Right now it's around $900 per credit hour and that is so much cheaper than any school near my home. Any suggestions or insight is much appreciated.
  23. Hi guys, I'm graduating in December. Does anyone know what entry level (0 years rn experience) make at medstar? Preferably the medstar Georgetown University hospital in DC? Thanks!
  24. Congrats! U have choice of Lexington, Lexington roof or market center. Parking is 175 per semester for market, $5 per day for Lexington. Not sure about Lexington roof. They like 8-10 walk from school. https://www.umaryland.edu/parking/parking-at-umb/student
  25. Name tags can be ordered online through the bookstore or you can personally go in and place the order. Also, has anyone heard anything about clinicals for new incoming students? The only email I have so far seems to be for 2nd semester students and onwards.
