ordered to give roxanol with resp. of 5
My question here is... was he able to eat, and she didnt want him fed? I would have a serious problem with someone who ate with assist, and his wife getting orders to make him NPO. Is she trying to starve this poor man to speed up the dying process? Stacy

Nicknames your pt's give you
I had a resident that used to call me biggen. I'm 6'2 and overweight. Never could remember my name, but always knew if he called for biggen and I was working, that I was coming to help him.

physician substitute
IBR is who I work for. I stay until the needle is out of my last donors arm. Last few nights I Have been out by 6:15. The latest I've ever stayed was like... 7:30ish. And you would'nt be there all day, hopefully you would have another PS or two to share the load with.

Its plasma... It's VERY chaotic... but organized if you watch it for a bit... lol.. Like the tango! We have a 6 week training program, it covers our SOPs, and hands on physicals... I had a blast. I am an LPN and making only a tad less then new RNs start at where you are. If I wanted to make that kind of money, I would normally have to work LTN. Which is where the money is for LPNs. The company I work for puts money into their staff, and their training. We have a quality program that goes above and beyond what the FDA requires of plasma centers. Mind if I ask what Company you were looking at?

physician substitute
Actually, I am a Phys Sub. I dont work at a blood bank.. Its a plasma Center. Its actually a pretty cool job. Our physicals consist of a brief med hx. quick pe.. lungs, heart, we check for signs of iv drug use/ intranasal use... then we give them the ins and outs of the pheresis procedure... and get them to sign consents. We also question about HIV /HCV/ HBV/ CJD risk. I work under a doctor, and have to be re-evaluated in my position yearly. If I may ask, did you have an interview there? I had never done plasma before, mainly LTC and MD offices, but it was diffrent, and the money was good... so I tried it... Been there 7 months now, and I can honestly say I've learned quite a bit. Hope I was able to answer your question.. feel free to PM with with any more. Stace

Don't put that in your nose!!
Its sad, I'm nearly 32 years old, and thinking to myself... I wonder if the olives I have in the fridge would fit! My sister when she was younger did peas, pencil erasers, and Tic Tacs. Those always fit so nicley!

Has anyone ever assisted in a roadside emergency?
I personally have stoped several times over the years. as recently as last weekend. I did EMS before moving south, and when I get to a victim, Its "i'm Stacy, and I know first aid. Would you like me to help you?" I figure what is unsaid wont get me sued. Our state has nurse license plates, and I wont get one, tho I"d like too.. but I do carry gloves and CPR mask should the need arise.

Scrubs for Short People!
Sassy Scrubs has custom scrubs. I have a hard time, being 6'2 and "fat" as one poster called it.. I like their scrubs, wear and wash well... bit pricey... but worth it if they fit well...

Where are all you SC nurses?
Hi y'all, Greenville here..... Well, Pelzer actually... But try to find anyone who knows where it is. Here 11 years now by way of NJ. Have been working in LTC and MD offices pretty much since I got here. Went to school in NJ so have no clue about nursing schools here. Have one friend who did USCs ADN program, and one who did Gville Tech. Me... I cant stand the thought of classrooms, and have seriously considered the Excelisor program. Has anyone here done it, or thinking about doing it? Anyway, Married, one fur kid named Marty... TTFN Stace:nurse:

LPN Program at SCTI
I never had any desire to do the nursing program at RVCC. SCTI just seemed to be a good fit. Never would have made it through without Mrs. Stitley kicking my butt all the way. They had some really awesome instructors when i was there. They are truly a group of wonderful, caring and compassionate nurses and tremendous educators. Good luck with the rest of your time at SCTI! License Renewal
I just sat down to read my renewal info that came in the mail. Little upset to find out that I cant just put down how many hours i've worked since the last renewal period. :angryfire. I have'nt done any CEUs, havent gone back to school... AND.. I'm going into work tommorow to resign. Think my boss is going to be reaaaaaaaaaaaaly happy about having to tell the board i'm competent to continue practicing? Anyway, he did it today because a co-worker stuck it under his nose for all of us, b/c none of us were aware of the change(she got her license in Aug). But shouldnt that have been somthing they would have wanted to let us know about? Or have I just missed it?

Need some encouragement
Renee, I failed my A&P my first go round, and in doing so, had to repeat it. I chose to repeat everything that first semester. I thought long and hard about just quitting the program altogether, kinda took a real big hit to my ego. I talked to one of my teachers before making that decision. She was someone I trusted and had a great deal of respect for. She encouraged me to come back, and not to let my pride get in the way. That was 11 years ago, and I never regreated that decision. You too will make it. Might make more sense this time around. You have made it this far, keep it up. Good luck.

Share The Weirdest Reasons Patients Push The Call Light
I had a res. when I was in LTC that pushed the call light because she was hungry. When the staff didnt respond soon enough, she called 911... 3 TIMES .. each time telling them that we wouldnt feed her, and asking for somthing else... ended up she asked for a hot dog and a bowl of grits. dispatch called back to nurses station, Not at all happy... Nurse on duty said " should have brought her the hot dog the first time she called". Had another res, same facility that would have his GF call 911 whenever he felt like he wanted to go to ER... numerous times EMS has come to door asking what the problem is... Same facility, nice pleasantly confused gent called 911 to report that he was being held hostage. or those pesky family members living outside the residents room (2nd floor) IN THE TREE!

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
:angryfire Attiudes like this.. just burn my butt. I have seen LTC nurses that would send someone to the ER for the littlest thing, and can only speak for myself when I say.. when I send someone to the ER for Eval... 9 out of 10 times, they are admitted. Nursing home nurses arent all trying to lighten their load... AND... we still have to get orders from the doc to send to ER. Sooooooo... its not all the nurses fault! :sofahider

Charting Bloopers
That is so funny. I was working one night, when one of my CNAs who had a higher regard for herself then the rest of us did, came flying out to where I was sitting on my break, and loudly announced that one of my residents needs to be IMPACTED! I straight faced looked at her, told her to gather up every nasty poopy brief she could find, and I would get to work on that promptly!

Almost fired today
What about this post am I missing? I have read the original post, and everyones replys, and yet somehow... I think i'm missing somthing. Every reply i'm reading makes sense, but everytime the OP posts a reply, she makes less and less sense. I'm only an LPN, but even I clarify orders, and have had docs mad at me at 3am because i've woken them up. IMHO.. someone needs to put on her big girl panties, and deal with the fact she in essence onlyl got her hand popped, and learn from her mistakes. She is not the only one who has ever made a mistake, and she wont be the last. Heck.. I myself have made some doozies in my day! NP... Not everyone is out to get you. Your supervisors must feel you are a good nurse and worth keeping... dont prove them wrong. Good luck...

do any of you work in anything other than ltc as an LPN?
Hi, I'm in SC, and have done LTC and enjoy it very much. The crankier my residents are, the more I adore them. For the last 2 years now i've been functioning as the assistant director of a home care company, and depending on what day of the week it is... I either love it or hate it.. some days I could fire everyone who works for me, but after 9 years in the nursing home, I enjoy being able to take care of my clients in a diffrent way.

I need ideas for infection control inservice
Dover, ]If you find anything, shoot it my way. I'm in the same boat. I work in home care and am doing an inservice on handwashing and infection control in the home. I'm trying to find anything that can tell me what little germies are living on your hands and what they can do to you. Most of the girls and the guy that work for me are minimally educated. Some of them are CNAs some of them are just life experience people. I have to find and do inservices that they can understand. If you find a good spot on the net where you can get that stuff for free ( I have NO budget) please let me know.. ] ]Thanks, ] ]Stace :balloons:
