Should Personal Internet Use be Banned During Nursing Shifts?
Yes and No...On our unit use is limited to work related issues/serchs ect...and personal stuff is limited to the computer in the lounge. Also no cell phones/texting in the station, if you have that much time then help out the other nurdes/aides. PS typing this at work at the nurses station :-)

Help name our ROBOT
Goodmorning all, Lask week out neurology unit had an inservice about using a robot "doc". This robot allows the doctor to "visit" a pt at bedside via a remote wireless connection. Our nurse manager is having a naming contest. You can view a photo of "him" by doing a google image search using the phrase " Hospital Robot" it is about 5 1/2 feet tall and has a large screen for a face.:monkeydance: I would appreciate any help, all we have come up with is Rosie or Robby. I am aiming for something w/ a Neuro component. Thanks.

"Male Problems" while nursing female
When I have to preform an EKG on a female( no matter the age/shape/ or attractivness) I prefer to have a famly member or a female staff member present. Also just have th pt. move her breast out of the way ( if able) and always kep the pt ; male or female covered. As far as "Twitches" go... just keep cool, be quick, and try counting in binary. Good luck.

Instructor is not letting me get female patients during clincal
:yeahthat: :yeahthat: Ran into the same type of instructor durring L & D rotation. She worked FT at the same hospital since the Bronze Age...Well as one of 2 men in the class of 36 we both spent like 19 days in the nursery. Most of the women in the class were like "thats so unfair ". I did get to see a vag birth and a C-section though:barf02: :barf02: and only spent 1 1/2 days in postpartum w/ a mom who was going home and needed d/c instructions. I say dont rock the boat, in 7 years of nursing I have had 2-3 pregers and none of them had a problem with me ( thankfully none of them needed a Fundle check because I have no idea what a boggy uterus is:roll ) If you do goto the Deen then you have a case for sexual discrimination!! Good Luck

Advice please on Huntington memorial in Pasadena and Los Robles
You are in luck !!! I recently did 2 13 week assignments at Los Robles on the oncology unit. It is a nice place to work, the staff is helpfull ( except for that one LPN ), there are several points of intrest/beachs w/i driving distance for day trips, and most of all I would go back there. On the down side they have computer charting, and E-MAR ( bar code scanning for med admin.). Please let me know if you choose this assignment and let me know how everybody is doing. p.s. good luck no matter where you end up:)

Feeling humiliated/Vent.. How would you respond?
First off it's too bad you hade to do "the run around " to find out about this peg tube suction set -up only to get the surgons line of B.S. I like the above responses about just letting it off at the curb and the passive-agressive bit about the consults too:rotfl: :chuckle :rotfl: This whole thing could have been solved w/ just putting in the NGT in the first place, I meen the MD didn't know if the ped could be used for suction in the first place so why try to experiment on the pt w/ a new proceedure ? BUT i got to know...could you use the peg tube for suction and what was the outcome ( w/ the pt and the surgon)? Thanks:p

Handling stress concerns
Welcome to the site and to nursing. You will learn to distance yourself from the majority of your pts with time, experience, and confidence in yourself and your skills. In time you will learn to trust yourself and your coworkers that the pt will have the best outcome, and that when they dont , you did everything you could. Plan on fealing this way for a couple of years. p.s. This fealing will serve to remind you that you are not Burned Out. Good Luck

I would be a Super Nurse if only I could fit into the tights:rotfl:

do staffs have a right not to send pt to hospital?
# 1. Welcome to Allnurses. # 2. The pt does indeed have the right to seek medical attention. Throw this up the chain of command as per your institutions P & P. # 3. Yes some nurses eat thier young as evidenced by some of the previous post. Personally I like mine w/ a little mango salsa and time to age.:rotfl:

Getting The Run Around With Traveling Company
This is too late for the OP but for u lurkers out there : ask questions and make sure u understand the answers! when your recruiter ask if u have bls/acls for example , fax them a copy and have them run it by w/ the hospital. If they ask for a titer then get it, dont asume the hospital will accept a history of childhood chicken pox, and if the level shows u need a booster THEN get it. The OP mis-communicated this w/ her md. Many hospitials have different requirements, document, hurdles u must jump through in order to work there. Take nothing for granted and have every thing in hand b4 setting out for your new assignment.

Kaiser questions re: Traveling
Thank you L & D Amy, I interviewed w/ them yesterday and it went fine, and was offered the position. I did learn that there is a med/math test I will need to take but that wont be a problem. I will have to float first, but i have done that everywhere. I guess i will give them a try. thanks again:coollook:

Renewing your contract
I have both renewed and extended my contracts. I typically take 13 week contracts ( 1 eight weeker though ).I have extended for just one additional week to fit into my holiday schedual, to renewing the entire 13 weeks. On my last assignment I was asked to renew but the hospital normally would only renewed for eight weeks after the initial 13 weeks (why I dont know), now I wanted to stay and in fact I had negotiated w/ my company " ...if I stay then I'm moving closer to the hospital and I get to pick out the appartment... no problem my company says, but getting a appartment lease for 8 weeks only wouldn't cut it, 13 week lease at a min. So company talks to hospital, hospital agrees and I get to stay at a good assignment w/ an even better appartment Like a previous poster stated it depends on the company, BUT it also depends on you and your company. I hope this has helped, good luck.

Kaiser questions re: Traveling
I did a search using the key words Kaiser and went through them systematically. None of them were from pt., most replys were from travelers. Many more post were from employees who seemed very happy w/ Kaiser. Again any information would be helpful. TY

"Your servers today will be..." Opinions please!
Question...Just how much time was wasted by some table of admin. numbnuts who just thought this $#!% up ? Was there a nurse involved at any level of the decision making process, of course not! I think as a good steward of the enviroment and of the community these note cards should go strait into the shredder for recycling! ( except for a stack of them for the executive bathroom)!!!

Kaiser questions re: Traveling
I have been traveling for a few years, mostly Ca & Az, but have not worked at a Kaiser hospital. After searching this site I found only one out of over two dozen comments to be positive. Can some of you California RNs and fellow travels give me a bit of advice on Kaiser in San Rafeal and in Redwood City? I have submitted my profile but have not interviewed as of yet. Can some of you confirm or debunk what I have read about floating frequently ( even 3 x's in a shift) and telephone interviewing w/ someone not even in nurse management? Any other bits about these two places would also be helpful. Thanks :balloons:

Hope you had/ are havinbg a good time I lived in San Josa as a teen and did two contracts at Los Lobos in thousand oaks and loved both places. hope this helps.

violence
Dear Nurse_Clown, let me express just how sorry I am for what you are going through and for what has happened in the past. I'm sure you did the best you could for your pt. in all of the confusion, and thankfully he turned out ok , now put him aside and concern focus on yourself. Firstly you wrote this other pt. is currently stalking you; this must be delt with now !!! You are not safe.:stone :stone Get this guy behind some bars STAT !!! Have you been checked out for injurys to you back and wrist ? Have you been to a therapist for the rape and for the flash-backs? Just take care of yourself so you can continue to take care of others.

Am I Being Wrong?
You will never be wrong when you are looking out for the health and well-being of your unborn child. The hospital should make resonable accomidations for you, this may or may not include an aide helping you to transport patients( that may be "pushing" things too far :rotfl: ). Before going on family leave you could try a tempory position in anouther area of the hospital like medical records, education dept. or some other non-clinical area where heavy lifting or I.D. might come into play. If all else fails then go on leave. Good Luck w/ your pregnancy and how things turn out at work.

The Ultimate Question!!!
I was 28 y/o male w/ no medical background, single, and no children. I was also a Hemodialysis pt. going 3 x's a wk. I entered nursing school w/ a full load plus pre req's and worked 20 + hours a wk. If I could do it then so can you. Good Luck.
