Full Circle, My First Year of Nursing
I'm applying to ABSN programs this year in hopes of starting this fall or next spring. Thinking about it has me anxiety filled already. I'm worried about not getting in. I'm even more worried about getting through nursing school and eventually being a nurse. I want to work in NICU too. Your story has eased my fears just a hair. If it wasn't so important to me I wouldn't be worried. Somewhere deep down I know that I can do this. And one day I'll be able to come full circle like you.

Can I interview one of you?
well i would like whoever responds to post the answers. i just want the personal info in a pm like their contact info. No one has responded yet so I'll probably interview someone else in a different field.

Can I interview one of you?
I have a school assignment to interview someone who does my dream job. Well I want to be a NICU RN and hopefully that happens soon. I've been taking prereqs forever it seems but will be applying for an ABSN program next fall since I'm finishing my psych degree as well. Anyway here are the questions for the interview. 1)Why did you choose this particular profession? 2)What are the educational requirements for this profession? 3) What did you major in during college? 4) If the training is specialized or an advanced degree is needed, what GPA is needed? 5) Are there ample opportunities for advancement? 6) What kind of income can I expect to have if I choose this profession? 7) What does a typical day look like? 8) What are the most rewarding areas of this profession and what are the greatest challenges? 9) What is your contact information: a) Name of person interviewed b) Company name c) E-mail d) Phone number I know questions 2, 4, 5,& 6 are questions i could answer myself and research so you may skip these if you like. And for the personal information please pm me. That information will only be shared with my instructor to ensure I did indeed interview someone. Thanks to whoever bites! [EDIT: 10/02/07 My assignment is due tomorrow and no has responded. This thread can be closed. ]

LPN / ADN / BSN / MSN. Whats YOUR plan?
I'm 23, almost 24. My plan is to finish my degree in psychology while completing more prerequisites and apply for an ABSN program for fall 08. Then I'll work at a Children's Hospital for two years before i go after the MSN. I'd like to get school out of the way but I'm in no hurry to be a neonatal NP. I want to stay bedside for awhile. Somewhere along the way I hope to get married and have some kids.

dealing with cramps
i have bad cramps too. the dr put me on bc and prescribed pain relievers. that helped but then he tried having me take my pills continuously before all these new pills were out like seasonale and my insurance wouldn't cover it so i quit all together. it gets so bad my chest and knees hurt and i get nauseated. i've been assured that i dont have endometriosis but i still wonder. midol and regular otc meds don't help me at all unless i take a lot which gives me a rebound headache. heating pads are my best friends.

Anyone taken or taking Bio 201 online at Rio Salado??
Taking AP with them now. I find it easier than AP in person at UAB in AL. This way I have more grades then I did at UAB. won't be taking Micro with them though because the school I'm transferring to, wants you to take theirs.

Honestly...Is there still hope for my future???
Oh come on. The OP is young. We all make mistakes. You've just read several stories of others that have been in her shoes and are now nurses. Yes she will have a hard time if she doesn't decide she really wants this but she doesn't have to give up her dream. Missbwm-- I've been in your shoes. I found the school I was attending wasn't for me, even though i loved the area. I'm getting the last of my prereqs done to start nursing school next year and finishing a psychology degree. You can turn things around if you really want to. But do try to retake those classes and then let them know you've repeated it so the new grade can go in. At my school there's a form you have to turn in so they will replace it.

Online Class
I will be finishing that class this week with Rio Salado. I live in Il and I found the tuition for out of state students is cheaper than the colleges around me. $147 per credit hour. They call it Developmental Psychology. http://www.rio.maricopa.edu/ci/schedule/ This link will take you to their class schedule. Most classes start every two weeks.

LPN program at Columbia Community
Yeah I agree with Ladybugsmom. CSCC has two options for LPN-RN but not a LPN program. Columbia is my hometown and I'm looking at moving back to apply to CSCC but the wait list is just too long.

Need help finding apartment in Birmingham
I used to go to UAB. I loved the campus. There are five hospitals in the area and all but one(St. Vincents) you can walk to with no problems. Parking was a problem sometimes but they have been trying to fix that with new parking garages. Here's a site I used to search for apartments close to the campus. http://www.birmingham-apartment.com/southside.html and another site with all Engel owned property http://www.engelapts.com/apartments.asp?area=Southside/UAB University Place is nice but I wouldnt pay that rent plus another household. Good luck apt hunting.

Help With Copycat Friend
I have a friend like that. When a mutual friend got pregnant, she was pregnant too(false alarm). When I switched my major to nursing she started looking into it as well. I started taking classes online and then she applied to the same school. She used to be an architect/engineering major with little interest in the health field. I've mentioned where I want to apply for nursing school at and she wants to follow so I made sure to keep some options to myself. I'm flattered that she wants to do what I do but if she gets accepted to nursing school and I dont I think I'll snap.

New Hospital Wing
When a panel of doctors were asked to vote on adding a new wing to their hospital, the Allergists voted to scratch it the Dermatologists advised no rash moves the Gastroenterologists had a gut feeling about it the Neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve the Obstetricians stated they were all laboring under a misconception. the Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted the Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" the Pediatricians said, "Grow up!" the Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness the Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing the Radiologists could see right through it! the Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow the Plastic Surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter." the Podiatrists thought it was a step forward the Urologists felt the scheme wouldn't hold water. the Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. And in the end, the Proctologists left the decision up to some ___hole who didn't give a s___.

Can you study to be an RN with the army without being shipped off to Iraq?
Is it possible to get out of the service after you get your bsn? Or would you still have a commitment to them?

Can you study to be an RN with the army without being shipped off to Iraq?
I'm so glad I read this thread. My mom is pushing for me to enlist in either the Air Force or Army but I dont want to. She sees it as a great way to get educational benefits which is great but I get financial aid. She was in the Army for 11 years so was my dad and other relatives. I was born on a base but I never had a desire to do that. Especially with the war going on. I think I'd be dq'd for my asthma anyway. The only way I'd join is if I knew I wouldnt be deployed and could focus on school. But as a recruiter told me you're a soldier first and a civilian second.

Where to get my books in Bham for my A&P 1 class?
well when I was at UAB if i didnt get them at the school's bookstore I got them at Snoozys. Snoozys is usually a bit cheaper. Sometimes I'd order them online but if there wasnt enough time then local places are best. AP book at UAB was $200 and hard to find anywhere else. Its one of those books I will always keep since it cost so much.

Kids home from school sick...could it be an opportunity?
I work in a daycare for kids whose parents are affilated with the university and/or hospital. When they are sick some of them do go to a center called Hugs and Kisses for sick children. The rooms are seperated by the illness so they arent all together. Many of the parents love that bc they dont have anyone readily available to watch their kids. I think its great because I know its difficult to continue taking off work when both parents work at the hospital. Good luck.

Why are there no evening ADN programs in Illinois?
I'm in nothern IL right now and have looked for the same thing to accomodate my mom's schedule. There was recently an article in the paper here with different college information. The Highland Community College's ad boasts that they are the only evening ADN program in the tri-state area. http://www.highland.edu I hope this is close by to you.

fainting for no obvious reason
no not pregnant. not possible at all. i dont think i had palpitations beforehand. heart problems do run in my family i dont know about the fainting thing. my mom thinks i might have been borderline hypogylcemic as a child but cant remember. i was always in and out of the hospital w/ my asthma. i havent asked my dad yet. i walked to the bank that day so maybe my heart was working overtime but until recently i walked all over downtown birmingham and never had problems. the other occasions this happened i wasnt doing anything strenuous. hopefully whatever it is thats causing it can be corrected or controlled. i will mention these ideas to the dr. maybe if i sound like i know what i'm talking about, he will listen.

from the us to the uk. is it simple?
hi my friend is married to a guy in newcastle. she has just started the process of getting him to the states. after she finishes nursing school she hopes to maybe go back to england and live for awhile. i know the immigration process is long just coming over here but how is it to go to the uk as a nurse? her ultimate goal is to be a CRNA but because of financial issues she might just stick with being a RN but she's not sure what area yet. does it help to have experience here first? Do you have to take another exam like the NCLEX and are their additional requirements? Thanks for your help.

Dissect a cat?!
in high school i had an animal lover anatomy & biology teacher. the class had animals everywhere---snakes, spiders, african mice, porcupines, ferrets, rabbits, birds, a scorpion and maybe something else i forgot. anyway although he loved animals he made us dissect a cat, frog, starfish, and a worm. i missed the class in 8th grade that did a pig. and at my college we have cadavers. its supposedly the only school in the state with them. in high school at first i was grossed out but i loved anatomy so much i dove right in.

fainting for no obvious reason
Sorry Siri. I understand that I was just wondering if anyone else had fainting problems for other reasons than hypoglycemia. I do not intend to use the board as a diagnosis.
