  1. 22-36 per hour-house prices $160-250K. Tank of gas $50. Groceries $150 week-Take home $600 weekly-Barely scraping by

Are doctors required to wear make up when doing their residency? What about male nurses-do they have to wear makeup or dress in drag? Let me remind you of what century we're living in here! Can you say "feminist"?
  3. lee22 replied to ails's topic in General Nursing
Have your instrucors heard of human rights? You have a right to not wear makeup if you so feel!!!!!!!!! And tons of it if it turns your crank!!!!!!!
  4. Look up "Ipperwash Inquiry" on the net to discover a horrendous case of police brutality-the sad thing is the health care system in that area is not much better. I've worked there and if ever there was a situation of institutionalized racisim it would be there. How do you feel about shooting an unarmed native in the back during a peaceful sitin (land claim protest) Makes you ashamed to be caucasian

Ive dated several docs-they seem to have poorly developed social skills-pass-Im more into real estate developers, MBAs etc-people with real money and more developed social skills-who wants a man with a god like ego ,that works those kind of hours? I find MBAs are more vivacious and have a more fun loving attitude-less ego. (do you want the CEO or the nerd from your high school chemistry class? A Phd does not take the dork out of these guys)
  6. puppies are important-thers always a way- i have 2 dogs and a cat-they keep each other company while im at work. crate trained them @ first-now they're great
  7. im wondering about labour laws-who else works 3.5 hours extra per pay period without renumeration?
  8. ive waited over 1 hour for help with a 2 person transfer -recently 2 hrs to hold a combative delerious pt for a CBS-have you noticed that the nurses that arent available for you are in your face when they need help?
  9. the doc I mentioned was reported to mgmt but never the authorities. he was reprimanded @ work by being forced to take an anger management class (which didn't "take" by the way) if it were me he would have seen me in court. I am amazed every day at the behaviour he is allowed to get away with.
  10. At my old job they removed the charting table because pts families would see us sitting there charting, reconcilliating MARS etc and complain to the nurse manager about how lazy we were "just sitting there" so we got to do that part of our job standing up. Thank god I left. Now I work at an institution that employs doctors that find it appropriate to yell and berate nurses on a regular basis. One in particular even threw a phone at a nurse in ICU- he's still working there. They also frequently refuse to return pages when they are on call @ hs (even when your pt has a SBP of 240)
  11. Everyone can take a joke-right???
  12. truth i hate nursing school and at lot of the crap you have heard is the truth but at the same time i am doing this for me.. the best part will be graduation..but the end is worth it all.. do it for you and ignore the rest.... woman are woman they are the same no matter what they wear... remember that after school... they don't change with an eduacation...
  13. Have you thought of commando? Get a good razor and go for it!
  14. When I went to nursing school I paid a firend to have relations with my husband on a weekly basis-it gave me time to study. It brought out the compassionate side of me and made me a better nurse. After, we moved far away
  15. :trout: I went to Mohawk College in Hamilton Ontario-the experience is similar to having sex with your exhusband 10 times a day, every day for 3 years. Shoot me now!!!!
  16. Nursing is a wonderful profession. i am an Ontario nurse- worked in Toronto, Hamilton and now up North (love it love it love it-Northern nursing that is) I don't suggest you aim for RPN. They are minimally educated and are being laid off in droves in acute care here in Ontario. The thought process behind the lay offs is that the education for RPNs is inappropriate for acute care clients and is more appropriate for chronic care aka nursing homes (if you want to do more then a med pass stay in acute care-it keeps your brain cells firing) The salary range for an R.N is $23.33 hr for a newbie (approx-give or take a few cents-we have had our union contract negotiated recently and Im only familiar with approximations) to $35 something an hour after 9 years experience. RPNs max out at about $20 hr in Ontario. Our contract expires in March and we expect a cost of living allowance to be negotaited at that time. Nursing in canada is wonderful. You can go anywhere in the world. Here in Canada the eastern provinces are notoriously low paying (@ RPN wages) and have great difficulty recruiting, although the cost of living is quite low. Alberta is the highest paid province, followed by BC and then I think Ont , Sask Ans MAn are all close. You can pretty much pick where you want to work due to the nursing shortage. Basically, FT work is harder to find then PT. You p rtetty much have to put in your time as a PTemployee and wait for Ft positions to come up. (it only took me 6 months here up north, but I was getting in excess of full time hours when I was part time) There are frequent nursing recruitment expositions @ the Royal York Hotel in Toronto and the Convention Center. Recruiters there can provide you with alot of info. zGood luck. Choosing this career was the best thing I ever did. I live in absolute paradise. The beach is at my door, I go skiing almost every day in the winter, there are bear, moose and wolves out my back door and I feel like Grizzle Adams R.N most of the time ( choose whatever lifestyle turns your crank and insert said lifestyle here) Good luck and follow your dream
  17. In most hospitals I've worked one must work every other Xmas and every other new years. This year I have Xmas off and New Years on and next year it will be the opposite. Fair is fair. Nursing is weekends, holidays and crap hours. Get used to it
  18. A similar situation happened with me and my present employer. I called asking them if they had come to a decision re our interview. I got the job on the spot. Yippeee. Now I'm working with the greatest people in the greatest place in the world and for the first time in my life I love my job. Sometimes the managers are busy with the day to day operation of the unit and a phonecall can quick it up
  19. Someone please explain to me why some people bring their infants in to the hospital and let them crawl around on filthy floors or bring them into isolation rooms )MRSA, VRE etc) What's wrong with people? Or coming to visit hacking all over everyone. Staff are guilty too. I worked in Toronto during SARs and let me tell you- this really annoys me. I already attended one coworkers funeral
  20. Life is a cycle. Death is inevitable-for all of us. Our profession enables us to assess situations which can be reversed and thus we intervene. Our profession also takes us to situations which can't be remedied. Death is part of life. It has no less meaning then birth. Important to remember is that you can make the inevitable much more comfortable for the pt and that in such situations you are actually nursing the entire family-and in some cases you are actually nursing the family more then the pt. You can truly make a difference in all these situations and therfore it need not be depressing but actually rewarding. What an honor
  21. Soory to offend anyone, but this is hilarious-(its so true)
  22. Ancef, percocet, tylenol 3, naprosen, toradol, morphine, demerol, o & b supps, flagyl, and ativan for me (ha ha)
  23. Nursing is truly a caring profession-after years of experience I am not so sure doctors fit in this category. So good for you. I have witnessed some extremely abhorent behaviour by doctors. Yes they perform tremendous strategical feats with their knowledge and skill, but when it comes to caring and compassion, nursing is usually miles ahead. Good luck
  24. ABSOLUTELY DOCTORS CARE-THEY SPEND YEARS IN UNIVERSITY, DEDICATED, HARDWORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OF COURSE THEY CARE-about their mortgages. size of their houses, boats, status with their peers yadda yadda yadda ( Recent reply when asked by a patient to sit and talk about her diagnosis for a minute----" If I had time to sit and talk, it wouldn't be with you"-----for real)
  25. sometimes its nice to do something for someone-if anything happend to her son in Iraq you will have done something beyond special-I am sure she appreciates you-what a nice Xmas gift-you have the spirit
