I have two kids (10 & 5) and I am a junior in my BSN program. A baby changes everything. I am going through a divorce also. Big, giant life changes like a baby, divorce make nursing school 100x difficult in my opinion. I feel like I have to work so much harder than the others. I have seen people have babies and end up dropping out, but I have also seen them graduate. Personally, I would reconsider it.

Guy comes into the front lobby of the hospital screaming at the top of his lungs he needs a Dr NOW. A surgeon shows him down to ED and he's still screaming "I HAVE NEVER SEEN MY DAUGHTER LIKE THIS BEFORE". He's screaming there's no time for paperwork/bracelet/verification they need a DR NOW!!!! Hes holding a 2 year old girl who is crying, (probly because dad is yelling at everyone at the top of his lungs) no obvious deformities/bleeding/wounds. Kid had a fever. 101 and a ear infection. He he didn't even park in a parking spot , just stopped in the middle if the driveway and refused to move. Huge scene.

I have been in my program for a year and a half, it's a 4 year BSN. I came as a transfer student. I am a little older, I am 28. A huge chunk of my cohorts are under 21, and a bunch are about my age with kids and there is a few who are older (40+). I really love my teachers, but my classmates make me feel like I'm a alien from outer space. I have studied with a girl from one of my classes, but I feel like she is always annoyed with me. I asked her if she wanted to study for finals together and she said she was going out of town and was going to study while driving down there. I told her okay and that I hoped everything was okay. Then I go to school to study, and she's there with another group of girls. Ouch. My brother goes to a local state college and (mine is private) and he said it's because my school has a reputation of having stuck up girls. They all get along together and then there is me, a little bigger (wt wise), my hair isn't perfect every day (I have 2 kids and my husband travels, and I work in evenings), and I don't have any piercings/tattoos. I'm pretty plain. I speak up in class, and try and talk to people but they just don't seem to like me. What is wrong with me?

I love working with elderly, don't get me wrong, but some of them won't do ANYTHING for themselves. Only when the families are around. Then act like we are crazy when cares go up.

I have crps/rsd on my right arms from a patient falling and it was a choice of her cracking her head open or me attempting to ease her to the ground. This is hell. I am in nursing school? So far able to maintain nursing school, I begged the dr to take me off restrictions. I got offered a job as a CNA on a cardiac unit and they had to rescind their offer based on workmans comp notes, and the fact that they think it's not safe for me to work. I'm super depressed, I picked up a job in admissions. It's just not the same. The only reason they found out was because when I did me pre employment physical and I ticked the yes box for filing a workmans comp claim. Worst mistake of my life!!

I am a CNA at a ALF. I have been here for 3 years. I get paid $11.37 a hour. I have 5 years experience. People that walk through the door with less experience make more than me. I have been a good employee. Now I am in nursing school, I am looking for A) more money B) wider range of clientele C) another job that I can call home for however long. I am kind of in the same position. I got a new job on a progressive care unit for $15.78 plus differential, double time on holidays, $1600 tuition grant per year plus tuition reimbursement. I will be starting at the bottom. I know nobody there, I have never worked in a hospital and I am scared I will do something wrong. However, this is career advancement. It is a big pay raise and a better opportunity. Just like mine. Go us!😀

I don't understand why some people lie either. There is nothing Shameful about being a CNA.

#6 really grinds my gears sometimes. I dislike this daughter/son/in-law-kids/priest/nosy passerby scenario "She/he looks uncomfortable when did you turn her last, has she had pericare/morphine/atropine/lorazepam/ice chips" as I am walking out of the room. What I really want to say is this:" I'm walking out the door, so obviously I was just checking on them. They are actively dying. Don't be a helicopter" What I really say is "Hi, I'm xxxx, I am the CNA/Med aid for pt tonight " then I find out if they are allowed to get health information from the chart and we go from there. Typically, I know which family members to treat extra special.

Not really swallowed butttt..... At my ALF one of our resident put a flower from one of the inside plants in her "front bottom". I thought it was a blood clot at first

Is it in ALF or skilled? I know in ALF it's in the contract that they are not with staff 24/7 so there is the disclaimer. I'm not sure about skilled or the hospital.

I get a lot of clothes at goodwill. They have amazing sales!! I got a brand new pair of nikes for $5.99!! I get my kiddos clothes there too.

Currently I work in Alf. I have worked there for over three years. I am in my second year of nursing school getting my BSN. The school I go to also had a couple hospitals. It's not going to great at the ALF, so I decided it was time to move on. I have been applying at a lot of places. I went for a couple of interviews at the university hospital, but I must have screwed it up. The first one I couldn't find parking for 30 mins and had to park in the street, so I was 10 min late (I left a hour early!!) and by the time I got to my interviewer I was drenched in sweat from running from the neighbor. The second one I don't know what happened, I felt like I was getting grilled by two nurse administrators. It was then I decided I was bad at interviews. Now I have this new interview at the progressive care unit. What types of questions should I ask? Does anyone have any experience as a PCU tech they could give me pointers? I really want to blow their socks off!! Thanks!!

I also work in ALF. One time the nurse thought the resident was having a anxiety attack, he was really having a heart attack. Always send.

I am a CNA but I have a few stories. We have a diabetic resident (sugars average 250) and his buddy the dementia resident. Diabetic resident got jello one night and the dementia resident got a piece of pie his wife bought. Diabetic resident was yelling "This is terrible!!" Dementia resident looked at him and said "what are you talking about this is AWESOME" Dementia resident also told me he was "going to make me loose" the other day. His words get mixed up and he wasn't aware what he was saying 😁

I am still in nursing school, but work as a CNA. I used to be tiny, but after two kids and studying I have piled on the weight. I also have 50 pounds to loose, on top of the 17 I have lost :). It is hard for me because where I work we get free meals, and the free meal is whatever the residents had for lunch/dinner. They are trying to keep the residents weights up (which they do a great job at, all our residents have gained since coming to our facility), but in return they are plumping up the CNA's. Everything is made with full milk, sugar etc. They also like their baked goods, and get fresh baked bread every day. I work evenings so this is what I do: 8 am- fruit 10 ish - cottage cheese/yoghurt etc 1 ish - something carby, oatmeal, sandwich 3-4 -protein shake 7-8 - huge salad I drink a lot of water and unsweetened ice tea. I cut out all pop and try to avoid the sweets. 17 down 50 to go!!!!

I had a patient that scolded me for laying the blanket over her with the fringe on the right instead of the left. Told me I have a long way to go in nursing school and I'll never make it. Over a blanket.

This is really interesting. I have RSD in my right arm. I get very intense pain. I have a pain management doctor, and meds but this day it was unbearable. I went to the ER, bawling in pain, it was so sore I was shaking. I couldn't sleep, my Teeth were chattering it was terrible. It was 4 am.I was on nucynta ER x BID and it was doing nothing. I was new to pain management so did not have anything else and didn't know what else to do. They checked my medical record and the DR on that day was a former Army doc. They gave me a IV of ketamine and it worked really well. Fast forward couple months later, I had another terrible flare up, worse than the last. Same doc, (luckily) gave me ketamine again, and couldn't control it, he admitted me for 3 days. Got the pain under control. Then three months later I had a terrible flare up. It was about 6 pm and they had a APRN on this time, they treated me terrible. My R arm was swollen and red and had a terrible rash, it was really bad, my arm looked like a calf it was that swollen. Instead of care, I got a lecture about how I shouldn't come to the ER for intense pain and because my pain management office didn't have a on call I was not getting anything. My b/p was 114/82 but my pulse was 130, they asked me if I was nervous. Are you kidding me?? I got a giant lecture from the APRN about wasting her and other doctors time and drug seeking. I went to my pain management doc that Monday (it was a Saturday) and told him what happened. He apologized and gave me six duiladed for pain, it took over four months for me to use those SIX 4 mg pills. I only use them when I have intense pain and cannot cope. I was in the early stage of my Dx so they were still running tests and finding the right Dx. I have seen both sides, people wanting to get high and getting oxycodones for headaches, then I have experienced being in severe painted getting treated like a criminal. I am still in nursing school, but these experiences have made me a better nurse already.. Sorry if I got off track!!

Can you go PRN? I work PRN at 2 places and pickup when I have less schoolwork ( yeah right!). It works out well.

I study when my kids are in bed. That calls for late nights and early mornings. My kiddos are 2 and 7 so they are a distraction. I also like to study at school.

Make sure you lock your cart!!! I worked in a ALF as a med aide and we got dinged because our LPN and our director did not ensure the locks were working on the draws. (Resident had their meds in their rooms, supposed to be double locked. One lock on the draw and the door to the room locked) it's easy to forget.

I work in a assisted living facility. I also work temp prn and I see a lot of students too. They said it is hard and they lost a few but it's worth it. One girl said that they have some people who are getting good grades that are working. She said if you can make it past the first few months you will. Be fine. Are you going to orientation? I am going the 22nd. I think you would do great!

I start nursing school on the 25th. I was wondering do you buy our books used? If so, what do you do about the online codes? My experience has been that most classes do not usually use them, and a used book is sufficient, but what about the ones that do? I don't have my syllabus before classes so I don't know if thy will be needed or not! I just have the book list, and oh, very very expensive at the book store! I think I will just buy them used an purchase a access code if I need it, by the website.

Congrats! I start the trad program the 25th!! I have talked to some of the ace students who do clinical a where I work. They said it is hard but very worth it!!
