thanks! I really enjoyed reading this article, articles of health issues interest me especially on Epilepsy due to three of my 5 children have had it and out grown it. Now two of my grandsons have it both which are very young. the LGS struck me as very familiar to my two year old grandson especially since he seemed pretty much on track developmentally until the seizure activity. He falls so much more than before and also barely says words and when he gets one right we get excited over here. The three year old as well, but before any his first seizure, which landed him in the picu, had delays prior to that so also familiar to his case. Not looking for medical advice at all just found this interesting and thought maybe my daughter should approach this subject with their neurologist. Not sure if that would make a difference in their medications or treatment plan but figure it can't hurt. Again very informative article! thank You.

I always thank nurses for sure! I am not that type that runs to the ER for a scratch heck it took a lot of twisting my arms and legs to make me go. I was in asthmatic distress and went to the er at scrips mercy san diego. I was treated very quickly with three breathing treatments steroids and had to have an xray. Turns out I had acute bronchitis.. when they came in and told me I with a sense of humor asked oh "was there a smiley face on the xray? they laughed a little and tried to convince me to stay the night for observation. I politely declined but the nurse came in a few more times before discharging me and really tried to persuade me. I did thank her and never forget her kindness! most recently I moved to Ohio with my daughter.. I had been having this tummy virus for around 30 days before I got here i was swollen in my ankles and still did not want to go but due to my daughters pleading I went to the Er here and immediately after getting there they put me in the med room. The doc ordered a ct scan with contrast, therefore I had to drink this clear stuff that looked like water. When the nurse brought it to me I asked "what does it taste like?" he said if you can imagine stale water that about sums it up" " I said Oh San Diego water!" He laughed and watched me drink it I took my first sip apprehensively I said yep straight from cali! he laughed again and said "ok drink up" i did. As it turns out it was a bacterial infection got a rx for zpac and got to go home! when he gave my discharge papers I said thank you for everything and the stale water lol! Anyone who puts up with my corny jokes deserves a big thanks! you all rock!

Whatever you do please do not use a national franchise social security advocate no matter how glamorous their tv adds look! Go local get someone you can sit down with in person and ask questions. I did become disabled due to a crippling case of parkinsonism that had me hunched over and couldn't lift my legs to walk nor hold much of anything even my cell was painful to hold for more than 2 minutes and I was easily fatigued. My Neurologist actually recommended I apply and gladly filled out my forms. I went with the BIG national franchise that advertises on tv. Staff was rude and I never actually met anyone had to do all the "Leg" work myself. May as well have filed on my own. I have since read their reviews and I am not the only one who feels this way. I know of others that have gone to a local lawyer and much better experience and quicker results. Best to you!

this is true I also think it's because we look non-threatening. But I welcome most of it unless a person becomes annoying.

Generally I don't tell most people. I do however take it in stride when famnily members goof on me as I am not overly sensitive and make light as well. I think it turns the wise cracks around. I would never tell another student as you stated due to the stigma and I am sure like everywhere else that would be another reason to bully. Also i get a kick out of those who believe once I got this diagnosis that somehow my intellect went down the tubes lol! Oh the condescending remarks lol! that is another reason I am not revealing to family that I am going to pursue the lpn course. I find it funny that I am the "crazy one" in my family but have a broader sense of humor, and am not easily offended as many of them I just roll my eyes and laugh my butt off!

WOW I am so glad I found this section! A few years ago my right foot started to not lift up but instead drag behind and coworkers noticed it and asked if I had some kind of stroke. I said no I'm okay and brushed it off. I kept trying to "physical therapy myself" trying my best to make it work like it used to. Because I always said if I lost my ability to walk and get around on foot I wouldn't know what to do. but it didn't keep me from working at the time so I brushed it off as it didn't hurt. fast forward 2011 my right hand started to shake a small bit on and off I was falling a lot more by then tripping over my own shadow. Still not worried still worked then fast forward... both my legs were refusing to lift I was losing what I feared most my abbility to be a physical person. My primary care got me a loaner walker until i could get into neurology at ucsd lajolla ca. I had tremors in my voice and then kind of warped I called the primary and they gave me good news that I was seeing the neuro in a week. I laughed and cried through this but kept my head up surely there was something they could do. the Neuro diagnosed me with parkinsonism which was caused by medication for a mood stabilizer that worked very well for me. I was told to get off of it immediately! My voice was called dysarthia. I kind of sounded like the old Katherine hepburn so had fun with that lol! even joked as seniors past me with their walkers as I was slower than a snail lol they said my arms and legs had bradykinsia due to the parkinsonism. And now I haven't needed a walker in quite a few months I celebrate my strength returning. My right hand does at times still temor but nothing like before! I still take a low dose mood stabilizer and no side effects. I was scared to say anything on here before, not because I am ashamed i actually don't worry about it at all! I was worried i could be denied entry into the lpn course or a job because of the mood stabilizer. Do i have to tell the school or future employers of my dx?

Except here of course lol! I only told my daughter today about my going to the lpn course and that's because she is balanced and honest. I am not letting much of my family know due to the negativity or the interfering telling me how to do it factor and such... I know for sure at least one will say "you are too old" "so and so couldn't make it it will be too hard on you" etc..another will want to know my gpa so they can compare their gpas from a totally different field of study. I realize I will be pushed to limits I never have been before but by those who know what they are talking about and that makes sense and I expect that. So to deflect negativity as much as possible I am keeping it quiet! sometimes I know I get over the top on my excitement so I will try to tone that a bit lol! Anyone else having to limit who they tell? How do you deflect negativity from people you care about?

I have worked graveyard but in another field obviously and completely agree and I said many times "if people do not stop calling me at 2pm I am going to start calling them at 2am on my nights off and let them see how much they like it!

Thank you! You really spoke to the introvert in me. I have been recently wondering if nursing would work out for me being I'm an introvert, this is the article I needed! I don't doubt my intellect to succeed or other qualities I personally have but was questioning my quieter nature but as you stated in your article, I am often told I'm a good listener and people don't mind confiding in me even those I do not know. I think that is because I don't jump to judge or speak I listen and reflect on what is being said. Thanks again as I needed this!

I am enjoying reading through the threads here, helps me get perspective. Not even in nursing school yet but hoping soon to be. Im a mother of five grown awesome people and better believe I caught on with "mommy assessment" and knowing I pulled the "oh I'm so sick" to get out if school lol! Now as a 47 year old grandmother I laugh at myself because I gasp a lot more when the little ones fall lol! But hey that's a grandmas job lol! My daughter says "mom if they aren't crying blood they are fine lol!"

For all of you thank you all so very much for all you do! I have been a patient having had 5 children and as well some surgeries. I always say thank you to anyone who has cared for me in any capacity when I've been sick. And even to those who were obviously having a bad day and couldn't be their all at the time. I am not a nursing student yet but hoping to be a nursing student by spring or fall 2015 depending how things get sorted. When I had 106 fever when pregnant with my dear daughter in 1986 I had an awesome nurse that stopped me from going into anaphylaxis due to my iv medication was causing a severe reaction. She reacted immediately and thoroughly as well she was awesome in explaining as she was treating me. And made sure before I left the hospital I would never forget the name of the drug I am allergic to. There are many other wonderful stories I have about many other amazing nurses which through the course of time have made the impression on me to pursue a career in nursing. Thank you all so much!

This tells it all! We had it for four days and were so thankful by the 5th day that we actually wanted to eat anything! That had to be the most horrible virus I have ever had in all my life! We all have an awesome sense of humor about it after the fact but when we were sick aka barfing we all said "kill me now please!" Lol!

I am confident in being intelligent enough, compassionate enough, loving people enough, but then comes that nagging little doubtfulness inside... Oh wow thanks for the advice Mseymour! and I just did a google map search and southwest community college is only a mile from where I will be living downtown! awesome!!!I can walk there no problem!!! Now I am more excited lol! I have thought about nursing in the past, but always seemed was a road block but now I see it clearly possible! I am going to get that NLN study guide after I get in town and start studying any spare moment I have!

Thanks to you both for taking time to respond and with great information! I would like to add some questions though if that is ok. Im going to be relocating to downtown Memphis come mid May, although I'm not a stranger to public transit , it will be a new area to me and do not know how possible it is to get from downtown to southwest by public transit. I mapped out from downtown to the tech school and that is very doable from what I saw. But I am not sure about commuting to Southwest, therefore I will have to check that out after I get the address. I also want to know what test do I have to prepare for in order to get in the RN program at Southwest? After getting the associates RN degree, how much time after that would I have to go to school in order to get the BSN? I am not trying to bombard with too many questions I just want to make sure I get everything lined up properly with time frames especially because I have a disabled son to look after. I have to make sure I have everything in place for him as well. also eddied to add: what prerequisites do I have to take? I am asking because I have never been to college other than some short courses I took online from Ashford which I don't think count???

Hi I am new here and have a few questions. I am 47 years of age and want to enter the lpn program in Memphis hopefully no later than next spring. I am getting the understanding that lpns can work in hospitals in Tn. is that correct? I have a true interest and desire to work at a children's hospital. I realize I could be thinking too far ahead and don't want to get my hopes up too high, but Ive read that St Judes is a good place to work but I am not sure if they hire Lpns. Also i read on their site that they offer paid externships for nursing students I am wondering if that only for those taking the associate degree? Also how much extra time does it take after I have earned my Lpn would I need to go to get the associates. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
