I have never asked a female coworker to cath a female patient. I have never had a patient express any concerns about what I am doing. I have had male coworkers be uncomfortable with female patients. Just be professional and don't overthink it.

Like I was told very early on, "suck it up buttercup". We take care of everyone. We do what we need to do. Be a professional.

MEN - come into nursing. Qualified candidates will have no problem finding a job. WOMEN - come into nursing. Qualified candidates will have no problem finding a job. Who cares what country you are from. Be nice and have fun. Life is good.

Nursing is one of the few places where gender, race, class, ethnicity, culture, sexuality, eating habits, car driven, looks, and almost anything else doesn't matter. It seems more important if you aren't a Seahawks fan here in Seattle. Now that will upset some people.

I agree. I just had a great OB rotation. Male. Student. Dealt with food. I had no problems. I had patients kick out the family but let me stay in the room.

I did not read this whole thread as it was too long. Most people are very supportive. This topic is huge in my ADN program. Turns out, you can thank the IOM (Institute of Medicine). "The committee recommends that the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees be increased to 80 percent by 2020. " They are the ones recommending BSN nurses. Most of our large hospitals here in Seattle are not hiring ADNs. BSN only. Look into a program and reapply. The Future of Nursing: Focus on Education - Institute of Medicine

I am nearly done with nursing school and one of the reasons that I got into it was because I love fly fishing. A 3 on, 4 off schedule is good for my fishing habits. Traveling to different parts of the country (hopefully world) to fish, and still have a job, is the dream. Did anyone else get into nursing for these reasons? Does anyone else have a passion that a nursing schedule allows them more time to do it?

Our program recommended that we cover chest hair if we were extra hairy. I think that it was more the preference of the administrators than an actual rule of the program. Clinical placement was very difficult for our program and they don't want the nurse managers to remember our school for anything other than the work we did.

Thank you for the tips. I am 6 months from my NCLEX and am struggling with the last two quarters of nursing school and preparing myself for NCLEX. All these tips help!

I use a notepad and pen. It fits in my pocket easier so I can use my hands for doing something. I also try to wipe down everything with alcohol pads after leaving clinicals. I leave my books in my bag study during lunch. I wouldn't bring an iPad into a patients room.

I correct people when they refer to nurses as "her" or "she". But no discrimination in any situation. Well, I suppose I have been used to lift patients and help do things because I am a male.

Get a BSN. I am in an ADN program and have to look for RN-->BSN as I get closer to graduation.
