Want to move to Texas
I am a nurse at Texas Childrens Hospital. I have over 18 years exp and make over 100k a year there. They start brand new nurses with no exp at a bit over 23. plus change per hour. I work with a couple of nurses that have about 4 years exp making abit over 55k a year. The cost of living in Houston isamong some of the lowest in the country. Dallas is way higher. You can buy a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath 2 car garage 2200+ sq foot houme for under 150k. That is on Katy, which is a suburb west of Houston that also has some of the best schools in the state. The traffic here is actually not really that bad. I have every thing I need on the west side for shopping and entertainment. I litterally have with 10 miles of me 3 major shopping malls 5 or 6 multiplex theaters, within 5 blocks of my house I have 3 grocery stores, with in 5 miles I have 2 super walmarts and sams as well as gas stations everywhere. (2.40/GAL) When I gotoworkin the medical center which is 32 miles away it takes me 35minutes in the morning and coming home takes me about 45 minutes. Not really that bad of a commute. Dallas on the other hand SUCKS for traffic. I have sat not moving there for over an hour because of an accident, They have a serious lack of freeways that you can by pass areas unlike houston, where you are never very far from as freeway. The weather also sucks in dallas. Hot in the summer and snows in the winter with ice storms every once in a while. In Houston it is hot in the summer and mild in the winter. Chose Houston Dave

Concerned about this and other sites
It does not list any jobs at all. It is all just public domain info that is gotten from each state board. Dave

What do you HATE to do at work?
Ummm....thats a MAJOR OSHA violation. Suction cannisters are NEVER to be dumped out per OSHA they are to be disposed of in red bags. The fine is about 50,000 bucks for doing it. Dave

Concerned about this and other sites
I paid the 9 bucks and got my report....It just shows where I have been licensed and when and past county of residence. It also has a section to show if you have had any action taken against you by any board. All this is public domain info that can be gotten for free from all state boards. It does not give your license number or current address. A compnay is just making money off of public domain info. Dave

Poor America doles our substandard social policy
Where I work, it seems to us nurses that if you have no insurance you get BETTER treatment than if you have it. I have seen people with no insurance get admitted and get the "million dollar" workup since they are not going to pay for it after all so what does it matter while those with insurance get limited testing due to the limitations put on by the insurance companies...there's some food for thought. Splenda and Hallucinations?
Splenda is not really an artificial sweetner. it starts out as regular sugar but has one moleculechanged so that the body does not metabloize it the same way as sugar is. I would be more concerned with an organic rather than a chemical cause of your moms hallucinations. Dave

How does your hospital handle staff who want to vote?
Your management HAS to recognize your constitutional right to vote. Not to allow you to vote on the scheduled election day is against federal law. They will have to make provisions to allow you to vote in your precient no matter how far from work it is located. If they try to stop you I would be calling the election board..the press as well as a lawyer. Dave

Breast cancer crusade turns contentious
As many men will die from Prostate cancer as will women from breast cancer yet it only gets 1/10 the funding and only 1/32 the publicity that breast cancer gets. I can see where there are battles for trademarks and imiages for breast cancer when you are dealing with the kind of money that it generates. Dave

A resident swore at me!
Tell him that he can take his head out of his *** and that you will NOT tolerate being swore at or treated that way by ANYBODY!! Then tell him you will be taking uit up with his chief...all the way up to the chief of staff for the hospital if need be. NEVER accept this behavior from a doctor. Dave

New overtime law "myths and facts" Yes, hourly RNs are affected
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! It's Monday 8/23 the dreaded OT deathday and uess what. Not one of us here that is paid hourly has heard that we will no longer be getting OT. The scare tactics that the Dems and nursing groups are using to put fear into people is unbelievable. If you got OT before today you will get it tomorrow. Seizure pts 101
I work on a pedi neuro unit and we often see people hungry after seziures. Not everyone has the same type of seziure activity. I have only seen a few people urinate in themselves afterwards or during and I have NEVER seen "foaming" at the mouth. Yes, sometimes they drool a bit but that is all. As for Psuedoseziures, one of the ways we tell when someone is psuedoseizing is to hold their arm up over thier head....then let it drop towards thier face. Sounds cruel but in a real seziure they do not have control of their muscle and will hit their face. In a psuedoseizure they will either let thier arm miss their face or turn their head. It is a natural instinct to protect your face and they do it without realizing they are doing it. Dave

Raunchy advertisement
Come on this is ridiculous....Nurses as a group need to get over themselves and realize that it is ADVERTISING for crying out loud. So I see an ad shouwing someone as a scantily clad nurse or teacher or cop..I take it and so does the public as for what it is..an ad. Oh Vey!!! Dave

digital stimulation, any suggestions
As a nurse who has worked extensively in the past on spinal cord injury patients, this is an EXTREMELY importany part of their care. A patient can be come impacted very quickly and it can cause Dysreflexia which can cause them to have a stroke or even kill them. It really is not a laughing matter. As "gross" as it soounds this is something that we as their caregivers must do sometimes. Also they can build up a tolerance level so to speak and it may require longer and longer stimulation for them to have sucess. As professionals we need to get over our own hangups, and help these patients. I have a good friend that is a spnial cord patient and it kills me when I see his care getting neglected. Dave

Nursing Salary Facts - You need to know!
Several things wrong here. 1) Yes we do make too little money. That is a given. 2) The average rate of inflation for the 90's was 2.81%. adjustred for inflation the 1990 wages for a nurse was 28,700 NOT the 24000 or so quoted. 3) The average wage vs the adjusted rate of inflation for a nurse shown in 2000 would have shown over 100% inflation. Never has the inflation ever been near that here in America. 4) I am living proof that wages are not stagnant. My wages have gone up an average of 11-15% EVERY year. that far beats out the average rate of inflation. My disposable income has gone up steadly in comparison to my debt load which has gone down every year due to better financial management and investment. 5) I make a hell of a lot more than a starting nurse where I work. I make over 10 bucks an hour more than they do and my wages again will go up soon. 6) You can make money in nursing. It is easy to make 6 figure wages in nursing. You just have to look and research to be able to do it. Dave

I was surprised at different answers on my unit about medication!
max dose on gent is 80 mg and never give faster than 30 minutes due to the fact that it can cause hearing damageif given faster. Also rememeber to figure the time of your flush in the total time give. We have a standing policy of giving the gent over 20 minutes with a 10 minute flush for a total time of 30 minutes. Dave

stupid mistake- wanna quit
Everyonemakes mistakes...hell after 17 years of doing this I still make mistakes. Also if the bag contained 20 mEq of K+ then even running it at 800 cc/hr would not have killed thepaitent in all likelyhood. We have given partial fills faster than that. Dave
