Splenda and Hallucinations?
Thaks All. I've made new tea with a small amt of sugar. Also, She uses the Bedside comode early in the A.M.s - urine nice and clear,no new c/o infect. symp.(had urology work up due to feeling of having to 'go'. Physician Rx hormone cream-is improving / no temp. Has good intake. She will be going next week to her Dr. for flu shot so will mention this occursnce. Hopefully will be the last. Could not really post it all at first because of time - When I started to look for the 'lizard' I suggested she move to the kitched or away from the chair she wanted to know why. I really didn't want to tell her if I saw the 'lizard' I might be jumping and sreaming around while I capture it so I said "it might jump on you". Her answer was "No it couldn't because its legs were too short!"

Splenda and Hallucinations?
Has anyone heard of Splenda causing hallucinations? My 86 yr. old mother called to me to look for a tiny crocodile that went under a chair. I thought it might be a lizard -although I've never seen on indoors here - so I looked armed with a broom and a pan to capture and contain it. Couldn't find it and the dogs and cats did not seen to be concerned when they walked by the chair- so just thought it was gone. THEN she called to me again and wanted to see aobut a man in the dining room! there was none so then she said Must be seeing things. I thought YEP! The only change has been starting to use Splenda in her iced tea for the past 2 weeks (1/3 cup to 2 Qt.) No new meds or vitamins either. Thanks for any reply.

old skills that we do not use anymore
Wather = water. No computers in the old days.

old skills that we do not use anymore
1.Putting the Mannitol Vial into hot wather to disolve the crystals - sometimes only to have them reform as you drew it up because a pt call out to you in a open ICU unit (only Curtains between Patients) and you went to see what he wanted- by the time you got back the vial had cooled too much. 2. Crushing morphine tab and disolving it to be able to give as an injection. Good old glass syringes could grind pretty good. 3. No air detector on a dialysis machine- just watch. 4. No heparin pumps on dialysis machines- just do clotting times --5. YOUTH. Young enough to work a double shift!

Oncology RN with cancer
Dear Lindi, Thank you for sharing even though you were looking for information you gave much encouragement for me.I am not an Oncology nurse(currently with Psych) I may need to PM you, for this Friday I find out the path report from my colonoscopy. I can see the need to get info from oncology Nurses who have 'been there'. I've remembered many of my AP resection patients I cared for in ICU in the late 60's and early 70's (yes, in the old days AP's went to ICU for atl least 2 days in our Hosp.) Let us know when you have completed your Chemo (I'm interested if you had been taking an asprin a day. yrs. ago a study came out -infro gathered from nurses that an asprin a day would decrease colon Ca- I did this for many months but had to stop in prep for Bx. of Breast 2 yers. ago and never really got started up again)

"Thats not my patient"
It is difficult to just "step into a room and help" when a family member asks for help. Years and years ago there were posted somethings (it has been over 20 years and I forgot what they were called) on the wall above the patients head of bed. It gave activity-OOB, OOB with assist. BED REST, No HOB ELEVATION ect. and the diet- REG Low Na, ice chips only, NPO ECT. the any fluid restriction, then another that was very important that really needs to be brought back. If the pt. was hard of hearing, visually impaired , ect.I've been away from direct'bed side nursing for many years but some things should be good sense- PUT the patients Tray table were they can reach it- with their phone water and kleenex- and if the patient can not use their right side don't put it there - this sometimes is the fault of the houskeeping when they mop- but if housekeeping could refer to a common communiction board that was kept current this would decrease some of the patients frustrations enough of my spouting- in the old days when we walked down the hall we looked into every room we could just incase someone could not call for help and would be frantically trying to get someone's attention! or find someone trying to escape over the end of the bed! Realy enough now-I'm stopping.

Funny things patients say !
There has been many over the past years - but one that always stands out happened shortly after moving to SC from PA. An elderly patient on hemodialysis said "I'm going to give up" my thought was -she just wants to stop this and die- As I was trying to think of what to say- another nurse swoops around me with an emesis basin, just in the nick of time!
