  1. Was on night duty, did evening vital check on elderly patient - spo2 was low, dropping on O2 and needed transfer. Next morning her consultant asked "why were you checking her vitals anyway, why is she on QDS vitals" turned out she had a growth pressing on her lung
  2. I do feel the same in some way - I am working on my way out of this job. In saying that I would never say it ruined my life, I have been thought some much from this work. Try focus on what good nursing has brought you, focusing on all the negative will not do good for your mental health. You have a plan and stick to it but what form the nursing world will help you with that.
  3. I thought I was going to save the world
  4. I try to have a lot of food at work, I eat two breakfasts, big lunch and afternoon tea. last meal is usually between 5 and 6pm, usually get home at 2130hrs - I may have a cup of tea but I usually don't eat when I get home - if I am really hungry I can make an omelette or grab a protein bar
  5. After only two full years of nursing I know I cannot do this for the rest of my life - I want to become a complementary therapist, I studied holistic massage and will do my aromatherapy this year. Maybe in a few years I can combine the two or something....
  6. I am an introverted psych. nurse, I am very sensitive to other peoples energy. I take my breaks on my own and sometimes I meditate, but usually read. Other nurses gather in groups and are all chit chat. I enjoy the company of my co workers but require down time. I do have to care for myself on my days off, I require a lot of recharge time and once I do this I am ready for the next day
  7. 1.5 years - I wanted to do 2 years but it was an awful place to work!!!!
  8. Almost a nurse 2 years now, I make more money than I ever did - I bought a fancy car and joined a private gym so I'm paying that off and I save - I only pay for myself at the moment but I am scared to think what would happen if I had kids, a house, bills on my wage!!
  9. Lasair is the Irish word for Flame and guess what...I am Irish...but not a flame
  10. Do a survey and ask what the patients want??
  11. Yeah, in long term care there is no one else apart from nursing that can put the likes of behavioural plans or recordings in place...we are the ones here 24/7. It is very different in my new work place :)
  12. I didn't have a good experience in my last job but that was the only psychologist I have ever worked with. When reports are being written up and actions been put in place psychology need to understand that nurses are the ones who put them into action. (I was in a long stay mental health facility) I have seen unrealistic goals that do not lead to positive outcomes and my paper load increase. I believe realistic goals need to be set and agreed upon together by the who MDT, not just one person.
  13. Never believe that a male patient will not hit you because you are female,
  14. I must sat that is pretty cool - I work in long stay applying for acute so it may come in handy - thanks
  15. I mostly work with adult individuals who have Huntington's Disease. The disease can cause behavioural, emotional and mental health symptoms due to brain changes.
  16. Do tell!!
  17. We don't use seclusion on the unit I work in - restraint is used as needed, it is not needed all that much but can be up to 3 times on a single person per day. I can understand the need for both but I have also seen the use of both when really unwarranted
  18. I think I had a month experience as staff nurse
  19. Nursing and care staff on my unit work closely together - Nurses have jobs that care staff cannot do but there is no limit to the non-nursing jobs nurses do. On any given day a nurse will be on the floor with care staff. I have cleaned and tidied my unit kitchen as care staff were behind. I supervise and assist in feeding residents. Nursing and care staff share checks as long as someone is allocated. Once nursing duties are complete (although I feel that ever happens) or when care staff are struggling I will personally do anything to help out. We all play on the one team and want the best for the residents.
  20. relaxation, yoga, meditation, weekly service user meetings, information on patient rights, mental health act,
  21. Debrief with someone, take what you can from it, try park it and move on - it is very difficult - if you feel you need it see if where you work offer employee counselling do
  22. As a new nurse what is keeping in my place is the experiences I am gaining. My current employer heavily supports my cpd, my roster is really nice with every second weekend off, I get on with the people really well, love my cnm 2 and I enjoy the work. I am working in the private sector and compared to my friend who is in the public sector I am getting managerial experiences, building really good relationships in my specialist area, and taking on a key role within my ward. I don't plan to stay here forever but I wanted to live here for sometime. There are downfalls too.
  23. The uniforms are supplied by the hospital and have the logo on it - I will put the starch on my shopping list and give it a go. Thanks peeps x
  24. Oh my I just cannot get the creases out of my uniform and it looks bad. I put them on a high wash, they need to air dry as I have no tumble dryer, I Iron them but they still don't maintain a good standard. I have three uniforms and I will not wear one two days in a row. I only have them 4ish months... I need some tips, my student uniform didn't need ironing....
